The Fighting Irish will seek re venge for the 33-15 drubbing they endured in Palo Alto, Calif., against Stanford last season. In that game, the Cardinal smashed Notre Dame for 322 rushing yards and 514 yards of total of fense. Stanford has also won two of its last three games at Notre Dame Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Arizona State (2-2,1-1) at No. 21 Southern California (3-1,1-0) The Sun Devils have regained their confident swagger follow ing a dominating 24-3 win last week. But that win was against Ore gon State. The Trojans will provide Ari zona State with a legitimate test to see if the Sun Devils have tru ly improved since their early-sea son struggles. Arizona State tailback J.R. Red mond, like the rest of his team, has yet to live up to preseason ex pectations. Redmond’s 85.3 rush ing yards and 171.3 all-purpose yards per game are not the Heis man Trophy numbers that fore casters were expecting. USC’s formidable defense, led by linebacker Chris Claiborne, does not want to host Redmond’s breakout party. Washington State (3-1,0-1) at No. 4 UCLA (2-0,0-0) Nick Medley'EmeraUi Stanford will have to rely on more than just gang tackles to beat Notre Dame in South Bend Saturday. The Bruins could be rusty after their scheduled game at Miami last weekend was canceled be cause of Hurricane Georges. But that should not matter. UCLA, which has a school record 12-game win streak dating back to last season, is not about to let its national- and confer ence-championship dreams be shattered by the rebuilding Cougars. Last season, Washington State needed a goal-line stand in the fourth quarter to beat the Bruins, a win that eventually landed the Cougars in the Rose Bowl. This season, Washington State needs a miracle. Oregon State (2-2,0-2) at Utah State (1-3) So much for Roses. After starting the season with two promising nonconference vic tories, the Beavers found out that they are still below par in the Pac 10 with two road losses. But Oregon State should beat Utah State. Maybe there will be postgame Humanitarian talk. Game of the Week The Huskies look to beat Arizona after huge loss to Nebraska last week By Tim Pyle Oregon Daily Emerald No. 14 Arizona (4-0,1-0) at No. 20 Washington (2-1,1-0) Although the season is still young, Saturday's showdown between the Huskies and Wild cats could prove to be monu mental in the Pacific-10 Confer ence title chase. More than a possible confer ence championship will be on the line for Washington. After being embarrassed 55-7 at Ne braska last Saturday, the Huskies will be trying to re-bolster their pride. Arizona may be licking its chops after watching film of that Washington massacre, but it should not get too confident. The Wildcats’ lone win in seven games at Husky Stadium came 10 seasons ago. The Huskies cruised to a 58-28 win over Arizona at Tucson in 1997 behind a balanced offen sive attack. Washington quarter back Brock Huard threw for three first-half touchdown pass es and led his team to 218 pass ing yards, 254 rushing yards and no turnovers. Speedster Ja’War ren Hooker set the tone by re turning the opening kickoff 89 yards for a Husky touchdown. However, this season the Wildcats rank first in the Pac-10 in scoring defense. They also boast an explosive offense, which includes the talented quarterback tandem of Keith Smith and Ortege Jenkins, prolif ic wide receivers Dermis North cutt and Jeremy McDaniel and productive tailback Trung Canidate. Washington’s offense will be looking to re-establish itself after dropping to eighth in the confer ence in scoring. Huard, consid ered a top-5 NFL pick by many, looks primed for a huge game af ter two straight sub-par outings. Receiver Dane Looker is Huard’s favorite target, leading the con ference with nine catches per game.
