Oregon looks for second Pac-10 win
The Ducks look to the strength of
their four Pac-10 ranked players
to lead them to wins against
Arizona State and Arizona
By Allison Ross
Oregon Daily Emerald
The Oregon volleyball team heads into
this weekend’s Pacific-10 Conference
match with Arizona State today and Ari
zona on Sunday with some respectable
stats.
The Ducks (6-7 overall, 1-2 Pac-10)
have two players among the nation’s sta
tistical leaders: senior outside hitter
Madeline Ernst and freshman setter Julie
Gerlach.
Ernst’s 15 kills against Southern Cali
fornia on Sept. 27 put her over the 1,000
mark, and boosted her kills-per-game av
erage to 5.84, placing her second in the
NCAA and first in the Pac-10.
Gerlach is averaging 13.62 assists per
game, which places her 12th in the
NCAA and second in the Pac-10. Gerlach

gon’s 707 assists thus far.
Sophomore outside
hitter Amy Banducci
and senior outside hitter
Alii White also rank in
the Pac-10. Banducci is
fourth in service aces,
averaging .043 per game
and sixth in digs averaging 3.33 per game.
White’s .309 hitting percentage places her
sixth in the conference.
Arizona State comes to McArthur
Court tonight with a stigma: The Ducks’
only Pac-10 win during the 1997 season
came against the Sun Devils on Nov. 15
at Mac Court. Oregon managed the win
without the help of White, who was
sidelined with a knee injury. This year
White is healthy and along with Ernst
makes up one of the toughest duos in
the Pac-10.
“Obviously we’re going to focus on
Madeline Ernst and Alii White,” Arizona
head coach Patti Snyder-Park said. "No
body has been able to shut down Made
line, but that is what we need to do.”
If Arizona State can contain Ernst it has
a chance to leave Mac Court with a win.
They defeated Oregon on Oct. 17 at the
Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz., last
year, allowing Ernst only seven total kills
and held Oregon to a .078 total attack per
centage. Oregon scored only one point in
the final game.

Duck women look for wins against
San Francisco and Portland State
By Tim Pyle
Oregon Daily Emerald
The times, they are a-changin’ for the
Oregon women’s soccer team.
After winning just five games in each of
their first two seasons, the third-year Ducks
(3-3) have the opportunity to equal that this
weekend just eight games into their 18
game season.
Oregon, which has lost two straight, will
play San Francisco today at 3 p.m. and bat
tle in-state rival Portland State at 1 p.m. on
Saturday at Pap6 Field. The Ducks are un
defeated at home, where they started the
season with two straight wins.
Freshman forward Chalise Baysa, who
leads the team in scoring with six goals and
12 points, said the Ducks feel they have an
advantage at their new home.
“We love the fans out here,” said Baysa,
who has scored all five of Oregon’s goals at
home. “We love the grass and new field and
everything.”
Head coach Bill Steffen
agreed with Baysa’s as
sessment of the home
field advantage.
“It’s that much more
motivating to show up
here, not only because it’s
a great facility, but to see the number of fans
we’ve had so far,” Steffen said. “It really
does lift the players. They get excited to see
how many people show up.”
