I think in the long run the changes were necessary.” Another returning student agreed. “It was worth every penny and every day that was spent doing this,” said Michelle Turner, a stu dent reading in the EMU Fishbowl. But Workman said the food choices offered don’t reflect the va riety she expected. “They offer lots of breads and muffins, but don’t offer a lot of sub stantial food,” she said. Although the first round of reno vations have been completed, stu dents shouldn't get used to the idea of an EMU without construction. Phase two is already in progress and should begin this year. Last year, students voted to spend $555,000 to install a new el evator for access to areas such as the International Lounge, the Adell McMillan Art Gallery and the Ore gon Daily Emerald. Currently, students with disabil ities are unable to reach these areas because the lift system can no longer be used. Miller estimated the project should take eight to nine months to complete. He emphasized that the majority of the construction will be external, causing little interference for students within the EMU. For the EMU board, the renova tions do not stop with the new ele vator. Miller said new fire alarms need to be installed in the EMU and telephones added to the exist ing elevator to meet city codes. Also, the board, with the help of the international office, plans to raise funds to redo the International Lounge. Miller hopes the fund rais ing will get it going, but no date has been set for these renovations. “Students would like to see more office space that is efficient,” Miller said. “But we are under mandates to bring areas not touched by the reno vation up to code.” For a few months, the EMU is quiet and calm. The sounds of con struction, however, seem to be a fixture at the EMU. The equipment should be rolling in soon. Take a Break & Check Us Out!
