Construction Continued from Page 1 centive for people to use more public transport, she said. With all the improvements being made, the outcome should encourage more people to walk, ride their bikes or use public transport. "A large part of the design and thought process will help public transport,” Malone said. Construction is finished on an 8-foot-wide walkway on the west side of the bridge for pedestrians and bicyclists, she said. Still to be constructed is a twin walkway on the east side of the bridge, also eight feet wide. “With the walkways, we can eliminate out-of-the-way detours for bikes and pedestrians,” Mal one said. In addition to the walkways, the anchor has been built for a bike bridge crossing the river from Alton Baker Park so that bikes and pedestrians don't have to mix with cars on the bridge, Malone said. Construction of the bike and pedestrian bridge is expected to begin next month. “We want to emphasize im provements for alternate modes of transport," Malone said. Construction has led to some traffic problems, and Malone said the city has met a challenge in this area of the project. “We can't just close down the bridge and do the work,” Malone said. “We have to manage for traf fic.” But for some of the work, parts of the bridge have to be closed. There are lane closures on a regular basis, Larsen said. “There are intermittent closures on Fourth Street and changing lane configurations on Club Road and Coburg Road,” he said. Malone suggests the best route during the construction is to avoid the bridge. Commuters should use the Washington-Jeffer son Street Bridge and Delta High way or use Franklin Boulevard if they are driving toward Spring field, she said. But during University football games, traffic control is another is sue. "Nothing we are doing with the construction dramatically helps pre- and postgame traffic,” Larsen said. "We do run Country Club Road one way during football games.” Commuters should take alternate modes of transportation and alter nate routes to the games, Malone said. People could even park near Skinner Butte and walk, she said. Felicity Ayles covers city develop ment, the West University neighbor hood and this fall's ballot measures for the Emerald.
