Women’s golf team
wins invitational
Oregon lost its intial lead
but came back in its first
tournament of the year

First it blew away its competi
tion. Next it blew away its big
lead. But in the end, the Oregon
women’s golf team finished on
top of the pack at the Portland
Invitational Tuesday.
“For our first tournament, we
were very happy with the way
we played,” head coach Renee
Baumgartner said. “We opened
with a bang.”
After the first round of play
concluded late Monday night,
the Ducks led the Invitational by
a blistering 22 strokes. However,
a 24-over-par third round cut
into the Duck’s seemingly insur
mountable lead.
"Today we slipped a bit and
shot a 312, but we learned a lot
from this tournament,” Baum
gartner said. “We need to not be
so focused on the score, but we
need to be more aggressive on
the final day. We need to not
worry about the scores but take
it one shot at a time.”
Senior Karen Bristrow shot a
71 in the first round of play,
which set a new course record
for The Reserve Country Club in
Portland. Baumgartner said
Bristrow’s achievement was a
great way to start her senior
year.
But Baumgartner also called
Tuesday’s victory a total team
effort. She said many of the
golfers have had to step up this
year to compensate for the loss
es of Kylie Wilson, Anika
Heuser and Julie Smith, who are
redshirting this season.
“This team has a lot of talent,
and they worked hard over the
summer,” Baumgartner said.
“There are a lot of new faces
playing in the starting lineup,
and they did a good job for their
first tournament of the year.”
The women will leave this
Saturday for the NCAA Fall Pre
view in Tulsa, Okla. The Pre
view will feature the top 18
teams in the country, and
among them Oregon has been
ranked No. 7 by Golf Week.
“I have no expectations [about
the Preview],” Baumgartner
said. “We want to improve as a
team and learn the course. That
way, we won’t put any extra
added pressure on the team and
we’ll play well.”

for the upcoming Nike Invitational
remains the same.
"We want to focus on playing
as well as we can,” Nosier said.
“The fact that we won doesn’t
change the focus for the next
tournament."
Nosier said that Burtner’s 217
stroke performance in the Husky
Invitational strengthened his
chances to travel to the Nike Invi
tational.
