Alina Wygonoivska is the only Duck to ever qualify for the NCAA individual championships.
Tennis teams set to make a raquet

work cut out for them in

Despite only losing one player,
the Oregon men’s tennis roster
will look dramatically different in
the 1998-99 season.
That’s because the name miss
ing is Erwan Kergroach’s, the
Ducks top-ranked player who led
the team to its first ever NCAA re
gional championship berth last
season. He was also the first Ore
gon player in 20 years to qualify
for the NCAA individual champi
onships.
But head coach Chris Russell in
sists losing Kergroach does not
mean that the team won’t have an
other successful season.
“Our No. 1 player went home to
France,” Russell said, “so that’s a

loss there, for sure. But I feel that
we have some really good talent
that’s going to help us. ”
The three players who Russell
believes will be key to Oregon’s
success are Guillermo Carter, who
finished last season with a mark of
14-15 in singles play, Carlos
TENNIS
lNjavarro, who
was 11-17, and
Joaquin Hamdan,
who finished 14
16.
“We’re hoping
that those three
can step it up a
level, Russell said. “As far as
playing at the level that [Ker
groachl did, we’ll see.”
The Ducks’ one new recruit is
Bertrand Devillers, a 6-foot-5 Bel
gian who was ranked in the top
five juniors in Belgium, and in the
top 40 overall.
"He’s young,” Russell said.
“He’s got a pretty good game al
ready. With the exposure here at
this level, he should be able to
help us out.”
Russell hopes to get as much
help as possible for the always
challenging Pacific 10 Conference.
“The Pac-10 is just very good,”
Russell said. "There’s just peren
nial powers that are at the top of
tennis. It’s going to be a tough year
in the Pac-10. Hopefully we can
bring some guys into help us. ”
Russell’s first opportunity to see
which of his athletes might take
steps towards reaching Ker
groach’s level of production will
be during the Ducks’ first tourna
ments in the middle of October.
“We have that expectation level
that we developed last year,” Rus
sell said. “And we want to try and
get back to that level this season.”
On the women’s side, last sea
son the Ducks were winless
against Pac-10 opponents. This
