Rebecca Gates, songwriter/
singer/guitarist/producer for The
Spinanes, plays, as Spin maga
zine describes their latest, “the
merde out of her guitar.” Special
guest Scrawl will open.
Sunday will feature El Vez and
the Memphis Mariachis. Though
he comes off as a King imperson
ator, El Vez brings a reputation as
“the Cross-Cultural Caped Cru
sader singing for truth, justice
and the Mexican/American
way.” The multi-cultural, multi
media atmosphere will continue
to blaze with special guest King
of Hawaii, a
“southwestern/country/surf”
blend and their accompanying
Flamenco dancer. The fun begins
at 8:30 p.m. when Los Mex Pis
tols open.
The WOW Hall draws more
students during the school year,
Fennessy said.
He defended CCPA’s reputa
tion against the question of
whether all-age concerts foster
delinquency. An Aug. 1
jTchkung! show was followed by
a drum circle of about 130 people
in the street. An anti-Nike chant
turned into heavy vandalism in
the 5th Street Market area around
1 a.m.
“Really, that was unprecedent
ed,” Fennessy said. “The band
did not have permission to start a
drum circle in the street.”
CCPA offers many opportuni
ties for volunteer work and often
showcases a University student
in their monthly art display. The
budget for 1997, which came
mostly in earned income, totaled
$363,300.
CCPA has a no-alcohol, no
smoking policy. There is, howev
er, a beer garden in the basement
of the building. Most shows cost
$5 to $10. Tickets are available at
the EMU Ticket Office, CD
World, Green Noise Records,
House of Records, La Tiendita &
Taco Loco, The Record Ex
change, and online at
http://www.ticketweb.com. For
