1997-98 season will
feature classic plays
University Theater will
also present a revival
of last spring’s ‘Two
Gentlemen of Verona ’

If the 1997-98 University The
ater productions left you bewil
dered, the mainstream theme of
this year’s plays may come as a
nice reprieve. If you perform in
the Robinson Theater, however,
plays like Tennessee Williams’
“A Streetcar Named Desire” or
Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town”
present a challenge to giving a
fresh rendition.
“I hope that we do put a differ
ent spin on things,” said per
former Elisa Morrison. "‘Street
car’ is incredible.”
This year’s theme is a tribute to
former theater professor Horace
Robinson. All four mainstage
plays will be scripts that he di
rected and they will all be direct
ed by former students of Robin
son.
But first, the year opens with a
revival of last spring’s “Two Gen
tlemen of Verona,” which will be
returning from a statewide tour.
“Two Gents” will close at the
Robinson Oct. 1 through 3. The
show features the immature
capricious lovers Elisa Morrison,
John Sanders, Megan Smith and
Rob Stockton. In the anchoring
comic periphery follow Matt
Berliner, Mocean C. Melvin and
Jacob Hutchison.
“Two Gents” continues as a di
rectorial return of accomplished
professor, Robert Barton. And an
other costuming coup by profes
sor Alexandra Bonds makes
“Two Gents” visually remark
able.
The new year will open Nov. 6
with an emblem of American
musicals, “Guys and Dolls,” di
rected by department head Jack
Watson.
Nathan Detroit’s twinlde-toed
doll Adelaide will be played by
Rene Ragan while Jonathan Cole
will try the role of Sky Master
son, done definitively by Marlon
Brando on screen.
"It’s a new twist,” Ragan said
of the more popular shows. “Uni
versity Theater, in general, is
geared more toward experimen
tal shows, avant-garde plays, and
playwrights who take risks.”
“Guys and Dolls” will be an
unusual step, especially since the
theater department doesn’t offer
a Musical Theater Arts degree,
Ragan said.
“It’s not the focus of the de
partment,” she said. “And there’s
only a couple directors who will
do musicals.”
John Sanders, who performs
with Ragan in the comedy troupe
Absolute Improv, explained that
the script will not alone dictate
the direction of the play.
“From an audience perspec
tive, with ‘Guvs and Dolls,’
you’re probably going to come in
expecting something,” Sanders
said.
There will be one less-exposed
play for spring term — “Dark of
the Moon”.
