land to reach first base. Emer
alds second baseman A1 Castro
followed Strickland with a sin
gle over Salem-Keizer short
stop Cody Ransom that scored
Maluchnik and Hanseen.
The bases were loaded once
again when Cox was walked.
Goodrich then walked in the
next run when he hit Sim
mons in the foot.
In an attempt to calm the
storm, Salem-Keizer brought
in relief pitcher Mike Huller,
but to no avail. Huller’s first
pitch rocketed over catcher
Mike Dean, allowing Castro to
score the Ems’ fourth run of
the inning. The fifth came just
two pitches later, when Huller
balked, scoring Cox.
The Emeralds scored a total
of six runs in that inning, and
the Volcanoes never recov
ered.
Eugene starter Brian Holden
pitched solid through five in
nings and was given his sec
ond win of the season, bring
ing his record to 2-1. Holden
gave up five hits, two runs
and tallied only three walks.
Aaron Garmong came on in
the top of the sixth, allowing
four hits, one run and one
walk in four innings.
As a team the Emeralds hit
as well as they played de
fense. They had a total of 12
hits and seven RBI. Castro led
the team going 3-5 with three
RBI, while Cox was 2-4 with
one RBI, two doubles and two
runs scored.
After injuring himself lift
ing weights and thus playing
in only two of the Ems last 13
games, Cox had to prove him
self.
“It was tough getting back
in because Colin [Stewart]
was playing so well," Cox
said. “I was better for about
three days, but he was playing
so well that it was tough to
come back.”
The Ems (20-34) have ten
games remaining and Saul
plans to have Cox out there.
“He’s gonna be in center
field,” Saul said.
