Rattlesnakes active
during recent heat
Local outdoors enthusiasts
are warned to be careful for rat
tlesnakes around Spencer Butte
and local foothills.
In the Lane County area, peo
ple are especially cautioned
about the Western Rattler, a
three-foot poisonous snake.
Though its bite is not usually fa
tal, it may be painful and cause
swelling and tissue damage,
said adjunct assistant biology
professor Tom Titus in a press
release.
The Western Rattler is unlike
ly to attack unless provoked, Ti
tus said. If one should encounter
the rattler, it is best to back away
and allow the snake to retreat,
he added.
The Western Rattler’s pre
ferred dwelling is on an open,
rocky, south-facing exposure.
