with the New York Jets. Terms of
the deal were not disclosed.
Spence, who led Oregon tight
ends last season with 38 recep
tions for 632 yards and six touch
downs, is one of four players at
the position currently on the Jets’
roster.
Kyle Brady and Fred Baxter,
who divided time at the position
last season for New York, com
bined to catch 49 receptions for
more than 500 yards. Both players
are currently under contract with
the team.
Earlier this month, New York
agreed to terms with Lawrence
Hart, a first-year tight end from

Man arrested
after shooting
A 47-year-old man was
shot in the chest early Tues
day evening near 12th Av
enue and Oak Street. Jerald
Edward Nixon remained in
fair condition at Sacred
Heart Medical Center
Wednesday evening. The
suspect, 20-year-old Rudy
Gorman, was taken into cus
tody and is currently being
held on charges of assault,
according to a police report.
After speaking with wit
nesses, investigators identi
fied Gorman as a suspect
and located him at 2750
West 18th Avenue. Police
said the circumstances of
the shooting are unclear,
Congressional imposter sentenced
The Associated Press
CHICAGO — A man accused of impersonating a
congressman and living off bad checks and stolen
goods was sentenced to nine years in an Indiana
prison.
Jason McDermott, 23, was sentenced Tuesday in
Porter County, Ind., Superior Court, where he also
was ordered to pay $8,700 in restitution to victims of
his scams.
McDermott got four years for three counts of theft
in Indiana and five years for escaping from the Porter
County Jail. He had pleaded guilty earlier.
Authorities said he could be released in 4 1/2 years
with time off for good behavior.
McDermott, of Elmhurst, also is wanted on charges
of forgery and theft in Illinois and elsewhere in Indi
ana.
Authorities say McDermott masqueraded more
than once as U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash. The
two are not related.
A Southern Illinois car dealer had accepted a
$4,400 bad check with the congressman’s name on it
and the words “U.S. House of Representatives” as
payment for an auto.
Jason McDermott is also believed to have used the
59-year-old lawmaker’s name to bid on a Hawaiian
vacation at a charity auction and for other purposes,
authorities said.
