1998 Prefontaine Classic
Hayward Field Timeline
■ 1895: University students build a dirt trade on the comer of 13th
and Kincaid that is used for field days, track training and competition.
■ 1906: The ASUO pays to have die Kincaid Reid stands partially cov
ered. Both track and football are played at Kincaid Field.
■ 1919: Hayward Field is constructed and dedicated to trainer and
coach Bill Hayward. The dedication ceremony takes place at the 1919
homecoming game.
■ 1921: Because of a growing track and field team and Kincaid Field's
inability to meet the team's needs, Hayward Field becomes its new
home. The students pay for the installation of a cinder track at
Hayward at an approximate cost of $10,000
■ 1925: The East grandstand is added to Hayward Field.
■ 1957: Thanks to a recently completed Autzen Stadium, the football
team leaves Hayward Field to its new home. Although common in
Europe, the track-only status that Hayward Field attains is a rarity in
the United States.
■ 1969: A urethane track is poured to replace the cinder track laid in
1921. Because the Eugene would host the Olympic trials, the surface
is made to resemble the track that the athletes would run on at
Munich in 1972.
■ 1975: Continuing improvements are made, including the replace
ments of the deteriorating West grandstand with the grandstand that
still stands today.
■ 1978: The track surface is redone.
■ 1983: Before the start of the season the field's crown is leveled and
the Infield runaways are repositioned and repaved with Rekortan.
Rekortan is also added to the jogging lane of the track.
■ 1987: With the addition of a 400-meter track, the East grandstand
has to be moved back approximately 20 feet closer to Agate Street
The grandstand is moved tv three trucks positioned on Agate Street
This project converts the track from 440-meters to 400-meters, which
provides for wider turns at the comers.
■ 1995: Historic Hayward Field's track is resurfaced in order to attract
national and international meets.
