Moseley: Lack of sprinters hurts UO
■ Continued from Page 7
took time off to have a baby but
who runs the 100 in the 11.so
il.85 range, the future looks a lit
tle brighter for Oregon in the
sprints.
However, Oregon’s weakness
in the sprints is nearly as historic
as its strength in the distances
and throwing events. Oregon
school records in the 100 and 200
both rank seventh out of the nine
Pac-10 schools that compete in
track.
While there have been some
highlights in the history of Ore
gon sprinting, the Ducks’ reputa
tion has been built, for the most
part, in other events.
“Certainly our team has been
cyclic in every area,” Heinonen
said. “We ran our school record
in the 4x400 in 1981 and didn’t
break it again until 1993 or
1994.”
Surely the fates of Oregon’s fe
male sprinters have run in cy
cles, and the last renaissance in
that event did indeed come in the
early ’90s, when Camara Jones
won two All-American awards,
albeit both at 400 meters, and the
Ducks were winning conference
titles.
The Ducks even won the na
tional championship in 1985, but
by Heinonen’s own admission
they were the only team to win
the NCAAs by getting points in
the throws and distances.
But times have changed, and
Louisiana State has now won 11
straight women’s national titles
by piling up points in the sprints
and jumps.
“Some places have achieved
what Mark likes to call ‘critical
mass,’ and you attract people on
having a tradition or perception
in that area,” Heinonen said.
“When people think about Ore
gon they think, ‘That’s the place
where people run.’”
But if the Ducks hope to regain
the status they’ve held before as a
powerhouse on the regional and
national level, it has to become
known not just as a place where
people run, but where they run
fast and at short distances.
And Heinonen believes the
Oregon women are indeed head
ed in that direction.
“In the ’90s, when our teams
have been the best they’ve been,
we had sprinters race at the con
ference level,” the coach con
cluded. "We think we’re on the
way to being there again.”
Obviously only time will tell if
that’s true, but here’s to hoping
that the Oregon women travel the
road to sprinting success fast,
and that it too is a short distance.

place after shooting 290s.
The Hoosiers’ Jenny Gray paced
her team with a five-under-par 67
to capture third place individually.
The Sun Devils’ Kellee Booth, the
Gators’ Sara Beautell, New Mexi
co’s Ryley Webb and Southern
California’s Jennifer Rosales all
shot 68s to tie for fourth.
For the Ducks, senior Paula Pat
terson’s 76 led the team and tied
her for 54th individually. Last sea
son, Patterson tied for 40th at the
championship and was named a
second-team All-American
"1 hit the ball well, but I think
putting was the key for me in not
shooting better,” said Patterson,
who is the team captain. "1
missed lots of birdie putts with
mostly two-putt holes. ”
The other four players in Ore
gon’s lineup are Karen Bristow,
Kylie Wilson, Anika Heuserand
Pam Sowden.
Bristow, whose tie for 16th at
the championship last season is
the best ever for the Ducks, was
second on the team with a 77 that
tied her for 68th. Wilson’s 78 tied
her for 76th, and Heuser and Sow
den both tied for 82nd with 79s.
Baumgartner said the entire
team did not putt well, but she is
eager for Oregon to erase the first
round’s bad memories today.
“We’ll play early Thursday, so
that will be good to get up early
and hit the greens when they are
fast," she said, noting the Ducks’
8 a.m. tee time.
