Sophomore A.J. Feeley unll look to establish himself as a contender for the top quarterback spot during
the scrimmage after having what Mike Bellotti called a “very strong spring. ”
Ducks: Quarterback race gets tighter
■ Continued from Page 9A
Sort of.
“The defensive line is an inter
esting position,” Bellotti said.
“There’s a lot of people still [in con
tention for playing time). I couldn’t
tell you who the top four or five or
six are ... and that’s sort of exciting
because I think they’ve played
well, so it means we have more
depth than we thought we had.”
As far as the kicking game goes,
Bellotti said Dan Katz and Nathan
Villegas have “clearly stood out."
The scrimmage, at least for the
first half and possibly three quar
ters, Bellotti said, will be played
under normal game conditions,
with the possibility of the clock
going to running time in the
fourth quarter.
The squads will be divided up
in a “best against the rest” format,
according to Bellotti, with the
first-team offense and defense go
ing up against whatever’s left.
“We hope it’ll be very competi
tive,” Bellotti said, “but I would
like to see that first unit establish
themselves as the dominant pow
er out there on the field.”
At quarterback, the Ducks go in
to the spring game in the same sit
uation as it ended last season,
with Akili Smith and Jason Maas
relatively even at the top of the
depth chart, although Bellotti said
sophomore A.J. Feeley has made
a case for himself with a strong
spring.
“A.J. has made it a much more
competitive situation, not just a
two-man race, but a three-man
race, and one in which I think
he’s closed the gap considerably.”
Bellotti said all three, along
with redshirt freshman Joey Har
rington, will be getting “equal op
portunities" Saturday, although
how much actual work they get
depends on how they perform
and move the ball.
Rather than taking an active roll
in the scrimmage, Bellotti said he
will sit back and observe in order
to get a better feel for where the
team is at before fall practice starts.

Oregon adds Indiana
to football schedule
Continuing its relationship
with the Big Ten Conference,
Oregon football officials an
nounced Thursday the Ducks
will play a home-and-home se
ries with Indiana beginning in
2004 in Eugene.
The Ducks will play in Bloom
ington the following season.
It will be the third and fourth
matchups all-time between the
two schools.
“The addition of Indiana Uni
versity to our football schedule
continues to illustrate our com
mitment to showcase our pro
gram on a national level,” Ore
gon athletics director Bill Moos
said. “I also believe it demon
strates that we have enhanced
our reputation across the coun
try in recent years, because it
wasn’t long ago we were unable
to attract such quality oppo
nents to play in Autzen Stadi
um.”
Oregon will begin its eight
year run of matchups against Big
Ten opponents this fall when it
hosts Michigan State. The Ducks
will play the Spartans in East
Lansing in 1999 as well as Wis
consin in 2000 and 2001 and
Michigan in 2002 and 2003. The
Ducks will host the Wolverines
in 2003.
