The defense regrouped on the

Strong safety Garret Sabol also
made an interception, picking off
a pass from quarterback A.J. Fee
ley and returning it for the first
touchdown of the scrimmage.
Something that did not please
head coach Mike Bellotti was
the abundance of penalties.
There were 11 penalties for 81
yards in the scrimmage.
“I thought it was a little
ragged." Bellotti said in a re
leased statement. “The defense
obviously did a nice job earlv [in
spring practice] but 1 think the of
fense has caught up a little bit
this spring, which tends to hap
pen. But I think the defense
fought back the second half today
and reasserted themselves some
what.”
The latest chapter in the battle
for the starting quarterback spot
ended with none of the four Ore
gon quarterbacks standing out.
Akili Smith threw the most pass
es but completed only six out of
13 for 45 yards. Smith also
rushed three times for 27 yards.
The Ducks play their annual
intrasquad game at Volcanoes
Stadium in Reiser, Ore., on May
2 after completing their final
three spring practices this week.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Eddie Jones answered his
critics — most notably Isaiah Rider — with his play,
not his mouth.
And now, according to Rider, the Portland Trail
Blazers need a miracle.
The soft-spoken Jones, accused of disappearing in
the playoffs, scored a playoff career-high 21 points
Sunday as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Blazers
108-99 for a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 first-round se
ries, which resumes Tuesday night in Portland.
Rider said before the playoffs that he would get the
better of Jones in their matchup, and he was correct
in the opener, outscoring Jones 25-14 although Jones
blocked six shots as the Lakers won 104-102.
In Game 2, Rider led the Blazers with 24 points,
but most of them came after the Lakers had taken
command. And at one point in the third quarter,
Jones had outscored Rider 20-9.
“The guys saw I was active, going to the basket a
lot,” Jones said. “They gave me the ball. I just need
to take my shots when I get them. It was important
for me to be aggressive.”
When asked about his critics, Jones replied, “I
could care less what people think. My whole life,
people have said a lot of negative things — Eddie
can’t do this, Eddie can’t do that.
“I know how to play this game. I have a hell of a
lot of pride. I thought I played a great basketball game
[in Game I], I thought I did a great job defensively. 1
can't get down on myself if the shots aren't falling.”
Rick Fox led the Lakers with a playoff career-high
24 points. Shaquille O'Neal had 19 points and nine
rebounds and Robert Horry added 15 points.
"My guys made me look good," O’Neal said. “Ed
die and Elden [Campbell] played great.”
Campbell had 10 points — all in the second quar
ter. Derek Fisher also had 10 points and seven assists.
Damon Stoudamire had 17 points and 14 assists
and Brian Grant and Walt Williams each scored 15
for the Blazers.
The Blazers didn't attempt their first foul shots un
til 8:12 remained in the second period. By that time,
the Lakers had taken 19. Portland finished 17-of-21
while Los Angeles was 34-of-52.
“Free throws are the difference. I think.” Rider
said. “If we get slapped three times in a row on the
arm, and they come down and get slapped once and
they call a foul, that's ridiculous.
“I got slapped. Rasheed [Wallace] got slapped, Bri
an Grant got slapped. You've got to call it both ways.”
About his matchup with Jones. Rider said, “I'm not
going to go outside my team to outdo anybody. The
bottom line is wins and losses, the personal thing
does not matter.
“I believe in miracles. Down two games to none,
we need a miracle."
The Lakers went ahead for good in the final
minute of the second quarter, and outscored the
Blazers 35-23 in the third quarter to take an 89-75
lead into the final period.

CHICAGO — The Chicago
Bulls are looking old at times.
Vulnerable, too, especially in the
fourth quarter.
Nevertheless, they are one win
away from sweeping their open
ing-round series from the New
Jersey Nets.
“We felt comfortable until we
got a big lead and then things
started to slip away a little. We
had to clamp down. I don’t think
we lost control of the game,”
Michael Jordan said Sunday after
the Bulls staggered to finish off
the Nets 96-91.
The Bulls struggled to a three
point overtime victory in the se
ries opener, blowing a 14-point,
fourth-quarter lead. On Sunday,
they had a 21-point lead in the
second half, and it nearly slipped
away against an athletic team
still fighting illness and injury.
“New Jersey is a young team
and they throw a lot of bodies
and energy on the court,” Bulls
coach Phil Jackson said.
“Their frenetic energy changes
the tempo of the game. There are
periods of time in the game
where they can have four or Eve
minutes and their energy over
whelms a team.”
Sherman Douglas hit a three
pointer to make it 94-91 late in
the fourth, but Scottie Pippen
then made two free throws with
14 seconds left as the Bulls, de
spite 7-of-13 free-throw shooting
in the fourth, hung on.
"We know we can play with
these guys,” New Jersey’s Jayson
Williams said, going again with a
broken thumb and grabbing 11
rebounds. “We feel good about
our chances at home. We don’t
feel good about losing."
The Bulls, w'ho can complete
the series sw'eep Wednesday, got
32 points from Jordan, 19 from
Toni Kukoc and 16 rebounds
from Dennis Rodman.
New Jersey’s top scorers Keith
Van Horn and Sam Cassell, who
played sparingly in the opener
because of illness and injury,
w'ere not factors again. Douglas,
Kerry Kittles and Williams
nonetheless attacked the two
time defending champions with
a fervor.
"For what God has given Sher
man. he’s probably the best play
er in the game.” Chicago's Steve
Kerr said. “He can’t shoot, he is
not very quick, but he still gets
20 points. I think they play better
with him in the lineup."
Kittles scored 23, Douglas had
20 with 12 assists and Williams
also had 10 points.
Kittles, who shot 3-for-17 in
the opener, had nine points in an
11-2 burst — including one bas
ket on a backward alley-oop lob
from Douglas — and New Jersev
trailed by 11 after three quarters.
The Nets cut the lead to seven
early in the fourth before Kerr hit
a three-pointer, made a steal and
Kukoc hit a pair of baskets to run
the lead back to 14.
But the Bulls could not put the
Nets away.
Van Hom, recovering from the
flu and slowed by foul problems,
made a basket with 22 seconds
left to pull New Jersey within
five. After Jordan missed one of
two free throws for the second
time in the final half-minute,
Douglas hit his three-pointer.
Cassell, bothered by a groin in
jury, didn’t start, played only six
minutes and was scoreless. Van
Hom finished with 10 points in
29 minutes.

SEATTLE — Brad Radke
combined with three relievers
to outpitch Jamie Mover on
Sunday — just barely.
Radke (3-1) allowed five hits
in 6 1-3 innings, and Mike
Trombley, Greg Swindell and
Rick Aguilera allowed just one
hit the rest of the way as the
Twins got their first shutout
this year. Aguilera pitched the
ninth for his fourth save in Min
nesota’s 2-0 win over the
Mariners.

only two hits each through the
first five innings.
