    Police Beat
Two men damage
car windshields
ITwo males allegedly caused
damage to several vehicles, in
cluding two vans owned by the
University, in the early morning
of Feb. 12, a police report stated.
A custodial maintenance em
ployee called police at 2:10 a.m. to
report two white males throwing
rocks and pieces of concrete at the
windshields of his vehicle and two
University-owned vans in the park
ing lot at 933 Franklin Boulevard.
The two men apparently were
throwing the objects from the rail
road tracks near the annex. The em
ployee then told police the two left
the tracks and entered the Facilities
Services heating compound.
Police arrived and conducted a
search of the area but were unable
to locate the two males.
Police arrest student
for marijuana pouch
2 Eugene police arrested an 18
year-old University student on
possession of less than one ounce of
marijuana after an officer spotted
the man with a suspicious pouch
on Feb. 7, a police report stated.
While on patrol in Ganoe Hall
in the Bean Complex, an officer
from the University's Office of
Public Safety saw the man exiting
the hall with a cloth pouch the of
ficer recognized as the type that

comes with a brand of hard liquor.
The officer then made contact
with the man and asked to look in
side the pouch. The man hesitat
ed at first but soon complied.
Looking into the pouch, the offi
cer saw a multicolored glass pipe
usually used to smoke marijuana.
The officer then asked the man if he
had any marijuana on him, at
which point the man pulled a film
canister from his pocket containing
three or four buds of marijuana.
The officer then called for assis
tance from the Eugene Police De
partment to issue a citation.
Woman cited for
minor in possession
3 An 18-year-old Eugene woman
was cited for minor in possession
of alcohol after being caught with a
can of beer while standing in a door
way Feb. 14, a police report stated.
Eugene police officers respond
ed to a call regarding a loud party
in the area of East 19th Avenue
and Columbia Street.
Officers observed a female hold
ing a can of beer in the doorway of
the house at about 1:50 a.m. at
1661E. 19th Ave. The woman saw
the officers and turned away, at
tempting to hide the beer.
Police said the woman became
very confrontational and was un
willing to answer questions relat
ing to the incident.
The woman later attempted to
li
walk away from the officers before
the questioning was completed
and the citation issued.
Man charged for sale
of stolen text books
4 Eugene police arrested a 36
year-old man again on the
charge of theft by sales after he
was caught selling stolen text
books, a police report stated.
The owner of Smith Family
Bookstore contacted police Feb.
12 after learning she bought the
same three types of books reported
stolen by a University student.
Police then contacted the man.
Officers recognized the man from
past incidents involving stolen
books. Police informed the man of
the accusations, and he said two
of the books were his and the other
belonged to a friend.
The report said the owner of the
books was able to identify them by
pencil markings made in the
books. But the man accused of
stealing the books said he could
also have made the marks.
The books were returned to the
owner with the expectation that
he would keep them until after the
investigation.
The man accused of stealing the
books was ordered to return the
money to the bookstore, and he
complied. He was then issued a cita
tion and ordered to appear in court.

Environmental Issues in the Middle East
Thursday, Feb. 19th

Resident experts on environmental issues in the Middle East
will first address the environmental geography of the region
that includes Jordan, the West Bank, Israel, Gaza, and Egypt
Efforts of the environmental movement that has reached
across political borders to mend and preserve the region's
fragile environment will be highlighted.
Following the discussion, a presentation about a unique
study abroad experience, Israel at the Arava Institute for
Environmental Studies, will be given by a former student. Earn
credit while living and learning with students from Jordan,
Israel—both Arab and Jewish, Egypt, the West Bank, Gaza
Strip, and other students from North America.
