Golf travels to Hawaii
The Oregon men’s golf team
will compete in the Taylor
Made/Waikoloa Intercollegiate
in Hawaii this weekend.
The three-day tournament
begins today, and action con
tinues through Sunday.
Among the 24-team field is
No. 1 Arizona, No. 4 Arkansas
and No. 8 UCLA.
Softball begins season
The Oregon softball team
will begin the 1998 season to
day in Tempe, Ariz., in the
three-day Coca-Cola Classic.
The Ducks will open up with
three nationally ranked oppo
nents with No. 2 Fresno State,
No. 21 Florida State and No. 25
Tennessee.

Ducks survive scare from Cougars
An injury to Carlos
Daniel allows Oregon
to escape with a win

Oregon took advantage of an in
jury to Washington State’s leading
scorer midway through the sec
ond half to steal a 64-63 victory at
Friel Court on Thursday.
Carlos Daniel, who led the
Cougars with almost 17 points and
10 rebounds per game, went down
with a severely sprained right an
kle with 10 minutes, 54 seconds
left in the game, allowing the
Ducks to take their first lead of the
game at 58-57 on a Terik Brown
three-pointer with 2:26 remaining.
Washington State (8-15 overall,
1-11 Pacific-10 Conference) retook
the lead on a Chris Crosby jumper
and a free throw by Steve
Slotemaker, who finished with a
game-high 15 points, but Brown
hit another three-pointer for Ore
gon on its next possession, and the
Ducks held on for the win.
Oregon (11-10, 6-6) ended a six
game road losing streak dating back
to a Dec. 2 loss at San Diego State
and has now won four in a row.
"We’re on one of those runs
right now,” Oregon head coach
Ernie Kent said. “Sometimes,
when you're on one of those runs,
you don’t play well but the ball
bounces your
way. We didn’t
play well at
times tonight
and we made
some bad mis
takes, but in the
last three or four
minutes our defense stepped up
and did a really nice job of shut
ting them down.”
The Cougars scored just 11
points in the game’s final nine
minutes, including a three-pointer
by Kab Kazadi as time expired.
The Ducks got off to a slow start,
with Donte Quinine sinking an ac
robatic reverse layup for Oregon’s
first field goal 8:15 into the game.

ing streak with a win over Oregon
State on Thursday.
Donald Watts paced the
Huskies with 27 points and six as
sists in the 84-74 win on a night in
which Washington’s Todd Mac
Culloch had just five points and
four rebounds. MacCulloch had
been averaging almost 20 points
and 10 rebounds per game.
