Micklavzina. “Sound has many
harmonies, and stereo systems
must accurately reproduce every
one of those."
Dustin Vifquain, who is taking
the course, said the class is good
at applying the principles of
physics to stereos.
“I’ve always had an interest in
stereos, so this was the place to
go," he said. “I’ve always been a
car audio enthusiast. I've always
liked music and always won
dered how it worked. It’s inter
esting because it’s not just a lec
ture. We always do labs at the
end [of class), so it’s not that

Ken Humphreys, owner of the
car stereo dealer The Fabulous
Tweet Bros, and a guest speaker
in the class, said using stereos to
teach a physics class is a good
idea.
“The concept of using some
thing as a vehicle is interesting,”
he said. “It’s a cool class, but it
needs a bigger audience.”
Humphreys participated in the
class to help create the tie be
tween physics concepts learned
in the first three weeks and stereo
equipment, Micklavzina said. An
other out-of-class project he is
working on is a visit to the music
school to study how physics can
be applied to acoustics.
The class will not be offered as
a freshman seminar next term, but
implementing another class that
uses the same stereo concept is
something Micklavzina is work
ing on.
“I’d like to take concepts like
this and teach a course using
hands-on activities to promote
education in the physical sci
ences,” he said.
