Morse named interim dean for business school
But Dale Morse said he
will not apply for the
permanent position

Dale Morse has been named the
interim dean for the University’s
Charles H. Lundquist College of
Business.
“I’m overwhelmed,” said Morse,
previously head of the accounting
department. “I need to learn about
a variety of new things. I feel re
sponsible to a lot of people — the
students, faculty and business
community as well.”
University Provost John Mose
ley announced Thursday that
Morse will immediately fill the po
sition of dean through the end of
the school year.
Morse succeeds Tim McGuire,
who is leaving to become the se
nior executive vice president and
chief operating officer of Manage
ment Science Associates Inc., a
company in Pittsburgh.
Morse’s colleagues said they be
lieve he is ideal for the position be
cause he is a consensus builder.
“Dale is just a great choice,” said
Dave Boush, head of the marketing
department. “He has the respect of
all the faculty, and he’s extremely
thoughtful. He makes good deci
sions and considers all sides ...
He’s the kind of person that can get
faculty to agree on things. ”
Wendy Mitchell, assistant dean
of the business school, agreed.
“He is a person who looks for
ways to bring people together and
find commonalities," she said.
Morse said his goal is to “contin
ue the work of the previous dean,
to try and satisfy the new demands
of a changing world.”
Additionally, Morse said he in
tends to look into coordinating
business curriculum so students
can complete core classes their ju
nior year and move smoothly to
electives their senior year.
Morse first came to the Univer
sity in 1991. Since then he has
helped to implement and revise
the MBA program. The program
was introduced in the fall of 1996,
and at the end of the first year, it
won the U.S. Association of Small
Business Entrepreneurs Award.
In a few months, the University
will conduct a nationwide search
to fill the position. Morse said he
does not intend to run for dean be
cause he said it creates a disadvan
tage to have an inside candidate
running for the position.
“When people find out [that
there’s an inside candidate] they
think the search is more form than
substance,” he said. “I think the
process is impaired by having an
inside candidate.”
