Concert celebrates Year of the Tiger
Traditional Chinese
folk music will honor
the Chinese New Year

Another new year is upon us
— the Chinese New Year, that is.
To bring in the new year, the
Year of the Tiger, the Chinese
Students and Scholars Associa
tion will present a musical con
cert on Jan. 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the
Central Presbyterian Church
(1475 Ferry St.).
The concert will feature the
Huaxia Ensemble of China, a
group of nine musicians from
the Republic of China who play
traditional Chinese folk music.
“For the first time in decades,
Eugene will see a chamber mu
sic show performed on tradi
tional Chinese instruments by
domestic Chinese musicians,”
said Lu Zhang, president of the
Chinese Students and Scholars
Association and the main coor
dinator for the event. “(Eugene]
will hear the true sound of the
enduring Chinese traditional
music and folk songs with a re
freshing contemporary beat.”
The ensemble will perform
both ancient and modern mu
sic. The piece “Joyous Meeting”
was very popular in the Ming
and Qing dynasties, according
to a press release. Meanwhile,
"Three Laughs,” which was
written for the ensemble in
1996, imitates the sound of hu
man laughter.
The ensemble has visited
many countries in Europe, Asia
and Africa, but this is their first
tour in the United States.
The Chinese musical group
has received much praise. Most
of the musicians in the ensemble
have been winners of national
and international Chinese tradi
tional instrument competitions.
Conducting the ensemble is
Tsung Yell, who has led the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra
and the Albany Symphony Or
chestra of New York.
Michael Yeh, a junior and
member of the Chinese Students
Association, said he is looking
forward to the concert. “This is
an opportunity for people to get
together,” he said.
“People back in China and
Taiwan are celebrating the Chi
nese New Year — it’s a lot like
Christmas for the Americans,”
Yeh said.
