Lake: Fish stocking may be factor

said Daniel Geiger, associate coordinator of the Out
door Program. "The students are so impressed that
they can see their shadow on the bottom of the lake.
There isn't anything like it in the world.
“I learned that the lake was changing, and I felt
the outdoor recreation crowd needed to be in
formed, so we decided to take a lead in the process
to get a new basin plan."
Approximately 100 community members lis
tened to DeFazio, scientists and various forest agen
cies speak about the problems concerning Waldo
Lake.
Four scientists specializing in lakes and environ
mental engineering presented recent information
and compared it to data collected in the late 1960s
and early '70s.
Despite weeks of work on their study, scientists
John Salinas and Doug Larson concluded that much
more work had to be done before they could deter
mine the cause of the increasing number of particles
in the lake’s water.
Other scientists questioned the findings. “Can the
changes be a natural phenomenon in an aging
lake?” asked Dr. Gary Larson. He said there were too
many unknown variables to determine the answer.
“We need to characterize the system. We can’t
second guess how a lake is going to respond,” he
said.
Currently, Dehazio has secured $550,000 in na
tional funding to deal with the human waste some
200,000 visitors leave every year. Also, a petition
has been circling to ban all motorboats from the
lake.
“Some people think it is fun and games to go out
into the wilderness, so it is good to see people talk
ing about this,” said Jenna Burd, a senior majoring
in environmental studies.
“The lake will take care of itself and restore itself,
but only if we continue to minimize human-related
risks,” Dr. Gary Larson said. “Let’s not do studies
and save the taxpayers’ money. The forest service
should take action now, like [discontinuing] fish
stocking and toilets.”
Waldo Lake, the second deepest and one of the
largest natural lakes in Oregon, does not have fish
naturally, but the Oregon Department of Fish and
Wildlife stocked the lake with fish from 1938 to
1990. Although the department has no further plans
to resume stocking, it could have been a contribut
ing factor to the change in the lake, according to Lar
son.
“It is a case of conservation versus preservation,"
said Jennifer Lloyd, a forest service worker and Uni
versity graduate. “Are we as willing to preserve
Waldo Lake as we are to use it? If we are not willing
to make a change because it is an inconvenience,
people need to be inconvenienced.”
