Thief steals woman’s
checks, forges three
IAn unknown thief stole a Eu
gene woman’s checkbook Dec.
30 and later wrote three forged
checks at campus-area stores, a
police report said.
The checkbook was apparently
stolen from a locked apartment
mailbox. There were no signs of
forced entry into the mailbox.
The woman is not being held
responsible for the purchases
made with the forged checks.
Phi Kappa Psi member
reports stolen items
2A number of items were stolen
from a student’s bedroom at
the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house
during the winter break.
One hundred thirty-six com
pact discs were stolen during the
break-in, which is believed to
have occurred between Dec. 30
and Jan. 4 sometime around 4 or
5 p.m. Damage was done to the
bedroom door frame and the lock
assembly. There were no signs of
forced entry into the house.
The student said a local con
tractor had several workers in the
house, which was unoccupied
during the break, who were in
stalling carpet. The workers had
the front door combination, the
student said.
According to the reporting offi
cer, fraternity houses are often left
relatively unsecured during Uni
versity breaks and are easily ac
cessed.
Large house robbed
during winter break
3A 12-speed mountain bike and
several compact discs were
among the items taken during a
burglary at 1708 Alder St.
The burglary, which was re
ported Jan. 1 by a resident who
had items stolen, happened some
time between Dec. 8 and Dec. 15.
Items taken from other residents
of the large, multi-level house in
clude stereo equipment and CDs.
A coin-operated washing ma
chine was broken into and the
contents stolen. A coin-operated
dryer was also damaged when the
robber attempted to break into it.
Six residents were in the
process of moving out of the
house during the approximate
time of the robbery. There were
no detectable signs of forced entry
into the house.
The reporting officer was ad
vised that the windows of the
house did not secure well. The
officer found the house to be
dirty, so he could not take finger
prints for processing. However, a
partial shoe print was found on
the damaged washing machine
coin box.
Man cited for cutting
tree limbs on campus
4A 27-year-old Eugene man was
arrested and charged with
criminal mischief after he was
caught cutting tree limbs Dec. 30
on campus.
At approximately 10:20 p.m.,
an officer responded to a call and
found the man in a tree west of
Beall Hall with a loop saw.
The man, who said he had pre
viously been a landscaper, said he
was not damaging trees when he
cut the three limbs. The man,
whose ticket was $505, was cited
and released.
The officer planned to contact
the tree maintenance supervisor
at the University to see if work
would need to be done because of
the incident.

Girl charged in child prostitution case
A 17-year-old girl is
accused of organizing
a teenage prostitution
ring in Astoria

ASTORIA — A grand jury this
week considers the case of a 17
year-old girl charged with forcing
other teens into prostitution to
provide food, shelter, drugs and
alcohol for herself.
Brandy Marie Huff-Olvera was
arrested Friday on three counts of
conspiring to compel prostitution,
involving three 14-year-old girls.
She is held in the Donald E. Long
Home for juveniles in Portland.
Authorities are considering
charging Huff, who turns 18 in
April, as an adult.
Huff is accused of arranging sex
ual encounters between teenage
girls and men in two Astoria neigh
borhoods in this coastal town of
10,000 where police have been in
vestigating allegations of crimes
involving sex, drugs and alcohol
for months, authorities said.
Huff “basically supported her
self” through the arrangements,
Astoria Police Capt. Alan Oja said.
The men paid her with alcohol,
drugs, food, housing and trans
portation, he said.
“At this point, I can’t tell you
how many people have been in
volved. We’re still looking for some
answers to some of those questions.
Suffice it to say, there were a num
ber of adult men involved and it’s
been going on for some time, proba
bly months,” Oja said.
Police have arrested eight men
for crimes ranging from sexual
abuse to furnishing alcohol to mi
nors.
The investigation was launched
after a 26-year-old man was arrest
ed for having a sexual relationship
with a 12-year-old girl.
Officer Greg Walker, who
helped lead the investigation, said
men would pick out a girl they ob
served in two neighborhoods and
Huff would “take an order for a
girl.”
Huff would contact the girls and
arrange get-togethers.
Walker said Huff would supply
liquor and sometimes cocaine,
methamphetamines or marijuana
“and essentially get the girl to the
state of intoxication where she
didn’t know what was going on
and steered her to the male adult,”
Walker said.
Huff allegedly arranged fora 14
year-old Astoria girl to party with
her and two men in Ilwaco, Wash.,
in December, where police said
the younger girl was raped by a 19
year-old man.
Two weeks later, on Dec. 19, po
lice found the girl, a runaway, in a
room rented by Huff at an Astoria
motel.

Perez, 21, and Federico Reyes
Javamillo are charged with sex
abuse crimes in that incident.
Some of the girls fell in love or
thought they were in love with the
men who gave them gifts and
treated them politely, Walker ex
plained.
Huff has two children who are
in her parents’ custody, police
said.
She is fluent in Spanish and met
the men, most of whom are Mexi
can nationals, by acting as a trans
lator, police said.
She would help them fill out pa
perwork for identification, cash
paychecks and get around in a
mostly English-speaking commu
nity, Walker added.
