Law school slated
for completion in ’99
The new building will
have technology spaces
and a bookstore annex

If you’ve passed the corner of
15th Avenue and Agate Street,
you’ve probably noticed that con
struction for the new law school
building has been under way for
quite a few months.
Completion is scheduled for
January 1999 or later.
"It’ll be kind of a relief when
it’s done,” said Jane Gordon, as
sociate dean for student and pro
gram affairs. “It’s definitely ongo
ing and exciting.”
She said the current Grayson
Law School building has limited
seminar spaces, no available con
ference rooms and little room to
house student programs.
The new building will not only
house the law library and faculty
offices, but it will also feature a
student lounge, a bookstore an
nex, food services and technolo
gy spaces.
She said the technology spaces
will prove to be one of the main
advantages of the new building
because each law student is re
quired to own a laptop computer.
“[Students] will be able to plug
in anywhere and have access to
the Internet everywhere,” she
said.
Because of the improvements,
Gordon said she will not mind
moving to a location outside of
the heart of campus.
“We’re looking forward to
falling in love with the other side
of campus,” Gordon said.
Because the project was ap
proved by the Oregon State
Board of Higher Education last
April, the entire project has made
quite a bit of progress.
Out of the $25 million the
school had to collect to fund the
project, only $1.1 million re
mains.
The University received $10
million from Phil Knight for the
project. For this reason, the
building will be named the
William W. Knight Law Center
after Knight’s father, an alumnus
of the University law school.
The project recently gained an
"impressive” $500,000 Kresge
grant to finish fund raising.
Currently, the Hoffman Con
struction Co. based in Portland is
working on the project.
The architecture firm of Yost,
Grub and Hall, also out of Port
land, was selected to design the
building after a nationwide
search.
“To pick a firm from Oregon
was nice,” Gordon said.
The firm’s location allowed a
lot of people affiliated with the
University to become involved in
the project firsthand.
Overall, Gordon seems pleased
with the project.
“It’s a win-win for the campus
and the law school,” she said.
