Bellotti evaluates Ducks’ season Coach Mike Bellotti says Oregon’s young defense has a very good chance to improve in the future By Chris Hansen Assistant Spoits Editor The offense was surprisingly productive, the defense not-so sur prisingly struggled and although the overall record matches that of last season’s, this was a more com petitive team. Those were some of Oregon head football coach Mike Bellot ti’s season-ending evaluations of his football team Sunday evening, hours before the team met for its awards banquet. "Could it have been better? Yes,” Bellotti said of his team’s 6-5 overall record for the second straight season. “There were games over the past couple of years, the overtime loss to Stan ford, the last second loss to USC, games we could have won and maybe should have won. That is a frustrating thing for me, and I have to look at why those occurred.” Chances are, what Bellotti will find is that some of those losses, if not most, revolve around a de fense that hasn’t been very effec tive the last two seasons, and once again finds itself last in the Pacific 10 Conference. It did slowly improve over the course of this season, though, and had its share of bright spots, like line backer Peter Sirmon leading the Pac-10 in tackles with 104. “I think we knew that we were going to be young,” Bellotti said, “where we were searching for con sistency, and in some regards we still are. “It’s tough, but that is part of the problem playing with true fresh man and redshirt freshman and sophomores at key positions. We are a very young defense that has the chance to get very much better in the years to come.” As for the Oregon offense, it doesn’t need to improve too much, it just needs to remain as is, something Bellotti was surprised it was able to do this season. “I was encouraged at the devel opment of our offense, consider ing the offensive line and the quar terback positions,” said Bellotti, referring to the question marks at those two positions the team faced coming into the season. “We knew that we had some youth there that was going to have to step forward, and I think they did a very, very nice job of keep ing us as one of the most produc tive offenses in the Pac-10 and in the nation.” “Going into this thing our first goal was a winning season,” Bel lotti said. "Achieving that goal is a very positive statement. We have put together four consecutive win ning seasons, and I don’t think anyone else in the conference has won more games than we have in the past four years. ” At the team banquet on Sunday night, tailback Saladin McCul lough was named Oregon’s most outstanding player. Some of the other award winners were comer back Eric Edwards, who was named most improved player; tail back Kevin Parker, who was named most inspirational, and of fensive tackle Marco Aguirre, who was named top newcomer. Bowl: At-large bid depends on two games ■ Continued from Page 7 State defeats Arizona, Oregon could be a frontrunner for the at-large bid to the Insight.com Bowl (formerly the Copper Bowl), which is the most attractive of the four bowl opportunities remaining. The Las Vegas Bowl selection committee held a lengthy meeting late Monday afternoon to narrow its search, but Moos said he assumes the committee will only be deciding on a team from the Western Athletic Conference, which has a contract with the bowl. Branan Allison, a representative from the bowl who was in attendance at Oregon’s loss to Arizona State, said Monday that Oregon is being given “serious con sideration” for the at-large bid to the game on Dec. 20. Officials at the Motor City Bowl could not be reached for comment. Oh the Places You Can Go!!!
