Saladin McCullough became
the sixth Oregon running hack
to reach 1,000yards
in a season during the Ducks ’ loss
to Arizona State last Saturday
By Ryan Frank
Sports Editor
It was such an inconsequential moment in time.
One that would not normally draw a second
thought from almost anyone watching the game,
nor from any of the players or coaches on the
field.
It was a measly three-yard run by Oregon’s Saladin
McCullough against Arizona State last Saturday.
It was no better, no worse than any of McCul
lough’s 213 other car
ries this season.
But when the num
bers were added up
and all the math was
complete, it was a run
that put McCullough
in select company
that only five other
Oregon running backs can say they belong in.
Going into last weekend’s game, the senior
tailback needed just 32 yards to break the
1,000-yard mark for the 1997 season, and with
that short run he did just that.
It was only three yards, but it gave McCul
lough 1,001 for the season, making him just
the sixth Oregon football player to rush for <
more than 1,000 yards.
He now trails just two players on Oregon’s
all-time single-season rushing list, Bobby
Moore, now known as Ahmad Rashad, (1,211)
and Derek Loville (1,202).
The special thing about McCullough’s feat is that
he accomplished it in 10 games, running backs coach
Gary Campbell said.
Moore set the Oregon record in 11 games in 1971,
and Loville became only other player to pass the
1,200 mark in 1988, but he needed a bowl game to do
it.

Unfortunately for McCullough, his milestone had
to come in a game the Ducks would just as soon for
get.
It was a 52-31 defeat in a game that they never
seemed to be in, and for McCullough the game wasn’t
so special either. He finished with just 69 yards rush
ing, his second-fewest total of the season.
