suffered his share of adversity in four
seasons with the Beavers

It just wasn’t supposed to be like this.
Tim Alexander came to Oregon State as now-for
mer head coach Jerry Pettibone’s first big-time re
cruit, the prize of the 1994 recruiting class.
He came out of Riverview High School in Sarasota,
Fla., touted as one of the top option quarterbacks in
the nation, and rightly so.
He was a three-year starter for the Rams and dur
ing his senior season rushed for more than 1,000
yards, passed for more than 800 and scored 21 touch
downs. He led them to an 8-4 record and the state 5A
quarterfinals that season.
He rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of his
three seasons at Riverview and led it to a 10-2 record
and a No. 2 national ranking by USA Today as a
sophomore.
After high school graduation, Alexander decided
to pack his bags and move out west to Corvallis,
choosing Oregon State over several more renowned
schools that heavily recruited him — including
mighty Nebraska, which is well-known for its use of
the option quarterback.
The Beavers were corning off a 4-7 season in 1993,
Pettibone’s third at the school, and showed signs of
being on the brink of turning things around.
Alexander was supposed to lead that turnaround.
By now, the Beavers were supposed to have
snapped their long streak of consecutive losing sea
sons, which has now reached 27.
