Career Center: The Starting Place for Job Search
Whether a student studies law
and makes innumerable contacts
or a student enters the University
with an undeclared major, the
Career Center's services can help
students sharpen their career
choices.
The Career Center, located in
Room 244 Hendricks Hall, is a
unique program. Director Larry
Smith said, "At the Career Cen
ter, staflhelp students convert the
wonderful learning they're getting
at the University of Oregon into
organizational talk."
He encourages students to reg
ister with the Career Center early
and use the facilities to their full
est.
To register, students attend a
Career Center orientation, which
is a 30 minute meeting where the
Career Center services are ex
plained. Three upcoming orien
tation programs arc Nov. 10 at 4
p.m., Nov. 11 at 3:30 p.m. and
Nov. 17 at 4 p.m.
Following orientation students
can register within 24 hours di
rectly on-line by calling up the
Career Center's World Wide Web
site at. . .

Professionalism is a key ingre
dient to success through the Ca
reer Center. "The Career Center
helps students make the transition
from the student culture to the
work-for-pay culture" Smith said.
And while it is true the Career
Center won't help someone meet
his or her true love or ensure they
get good grades, what the Career
Center will do is provide students
with the tools that could lead to
dramatic life changes.
As an example, Smith said stu
dents may not understand the re
lationship between making deci
sions for class assignments and
the ability to succeed at profes
sional tasks involving decision
making.
Students find that if they apply
what they know, within six
months of graduation dead-end
jobs are ancient history and the
door to a professional career is
wide open.
"Many jobs are acquired by in
dividual initiative," Smith said.
"They are coming through the
networking-the resources at the
Career Center help students to
prepare to go get their own jobs.
We help students with interview
ing, resume' skills,and identifying
employers to contact and strate
gies to use when contacting those
employers."
In 1994 students passed a bal
lot measure eliminating fees for
resource costs and since then, all
services provided by the Career
Center are covered through the
Incidental fee.
The Career Center hours arc
Monday through Friday from
8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with
extended hours on Mondays until
6 p.m.
