They must be an extension of us and understand exactly what we need people to be doing on that floor — they have to have that knowledge.” McShane, 6-foot-4 and 182 pounds, could be considered the front-runner for the spot after serv ing as Wilkins’ backup last season, albeit playing a very limited role while averaging seven minutes, 1.7 points and one assist per game. But it was experience playing at the Pacific-10 Conference level nonetheless. “It helped me to see what it was all about,” McShane said. “It gave me a chance to play behind Kenya and practice against him every day. So, I have a pretty good idea of what to expect out there this year.” Rosemond, 6-foot-l and 170 pounds, last played for Okaloosa Walton Community College in Niceville, Fla., in 1995 and led the team to a 36-4 record and the No. 1 national ranking among junior colleges, while averaging 12 points and eight assists per game. He came to the Ducks sight un seen, but has impressed Kent so far. “1 think he has a knowledge of the game that puts him in the cate gory of your true, true point guard because he has a true point guard mentality,” Kent said. “It’s just go ing to be a matter of him getting a grasp of our system. ” Something Rosemond doesn’t think he will have much difficulty doing. “I think this system suits me be cause I like to get up and down the court,” he said. “In junior college, that’s how you play. There’s no set offense, you just get up and down the court.” Because Kent brought in his own system and a brand new of fense, the experience McShane has over Rosemond is limited. But McShane did benefit by running Kent’s offense when the team trav eled to Europe in August to play some exhibition games, a trip Rosemond was not eligible to take because he didn't play on the team last season. Regardless of experience, though, Kent said there is a com petitive battle occurring between McShane and Rosemond and he wouldn’t say who, if either one, has the upper hand. “I think they are forcing each other to be more conscious of what’s going on and more con scious of getting into the gym a lit tle more extra and to be more con scious of grasping the system a lot sooner,” Kent said. “In the long run, it is going to make each of them better players, which in turn will make us a bet ter basketball team. ” But is it a concern to Kent that both players fighting it out for a position that naturally turns out the leader of the team, both on and off the floor, are so inexperienced? “Yes and no,” he admitted. “Yes from the standpoint that they’re going to have to learn some things and make some adjust ments, but no from the standpoint that I think they both have the ca pabilities to do that. ” Living with Diabetes Fall Term Meetings Everyone is Welcome • Mutual Support •New information and solutions • Referral to services • Type I, Type II diabetics • People with diabetes in their families • Friends, family, and people living with diabetics N, utrition for people with non-insulin dependent diabetes Tuesday, November 4 6:00PM-7:00PM Gold Room, Carson Hall Diabetes, xercise and hypoglycemia Monday, November 10 6:00PM-7:00PM Gold Room, Carson Hall For more information, call the Health Center Pharmacy at 346-4454.
