Oregon daily emerald now on the world wide web Price: Cougars will bounce back Washington coach Mike Price vows his team will rebound from its loss to the Sun Devils By Nicholas K. Geranios The Associated Press SPOKANE, Wash. — Washing ton State coach Mike Price vowed Sunday that the Cougars will rebound from "one of the most disappointing moments of my coaching career.” Arizona State recovered a pair of fumbles for touchdowns in the final three minutes to thwart a WSU comeback and win 44-31. The loss dropped the Cougars six spots to 16th on The Associat ed Press football poll, and dam aged their hopes of making the Rose Bowl for the first time since 1931. “We’ve still got a chance to go to the Rose Bowl,” Price said, al though the Cougars (7-1, 5-1 in the Pac-10) face must-win games against Stanford and Washington in the final three weeks. "I guarantee you we are bounc ing back,” Price said. But before they face the Pac-10 foes, the Cougars will host South western Louisiana (1-8) next weekend in Pullman. “I think we’re angry,” Price said of his team, “They want to play again.” The loss continued Price’s snake-bitten streak in November games. He now is 4-20 in the month of November as Cougar coach, 0-13 in road games. “I’m not going to go over the reasons,” Price said, expressing irritation at persistent questions about the November losses. “Their [ASU's] offensive line and defensive line had more to do with it than the date.” Washington is now in the dri ver’s seat for the Pac-lO’s berth in the Rose Bowl, with a 5-0 league record. The Cougars and UCLA are second at 5-1, while Arizona State remains alive at 4-1. Price expressed pride in the WSU comeback from a 24-0 deficit, especially the play of quarterback Ryan Leaf. Playing with a sore forearm and in the face of a ferocious pass rush, Leaf completed 24 of 49 passes for a career-high 447 yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Leaf was sacked eight times, and would have gone down even more if he hadn’t used his size to shed ASU tacklers and scramble out of danger. “I’m real, real proud to be the coach of these courageous, tough football players,” Price said. "There is not a tougher quarter back in the country than Ryan Leaf. He can hardly walk today. “He played like a Heisman Trophy candidate plays,” Price said. Leaf, despite suffering arm, an kle and knee injuries, will be ready to play against Southwest ern Louisiana, Price said. But the Cougars’ top two run ning backs, Michael Black and Dejuan Gilmore, were both limp ing after the game, Price said. Safety Duane Stewart may miss the next game with a knee injury. The Sun Devils showed why they are the top defense in the Pac-10. They limited Black to 28 yards on 14 carries, one-quarter of his 104-yard per game average. The Cougars managed only 51 net rushing yards the entire game. Nowhere to run to. Nowhere to hide.
