The Stanford men’s and
women’s teams come into the Pac
10 Championships ranked No. 1
in the country and are the heavy
favorites to defend their confer
ence and NCAA titles this season.
This is not to mention the fact
that the Stanford women recorded
a convincing victory over the No. 4
Ducks just three weeks ago at the
Furman Invitational in Greenville,
S.C.
“We are healthier now than we
then were the first time we met
them,” women's head coach Tom
Heinonen said. “We are running
real strong right now, and I think
we’re capable of closing the gap
over Stanford.”
Both Stanford’s and Oregon’s
men and women rank No. 1 and
No. 2, respectively, in the Pac-10,
but the drop to the conference's
No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 teams isn't
quite as large as it has been in
years past.
The women’s race is loaded
with championship-caliber teams
and All-Americans from last sea
son. Four teams enter the champi
onship ranked in the nation’s top
14, including No. 13 UCLA and
No. 14 Washington.
“Everyone is real focused on
what they need to do this week
end," Marie Davis said. “This is a
tough field, but everyone is confi
dent and we expect to Finish well.
We just need to go into the race
thinking we can run with any
one.”
As they should, Heinonen said.
"We think we can show that we
are major players in the title
chase,” Heinonen said. "It's im
portant to get on a roll this week
end. It’s important to work togeth
er as teammates.”
The men’s race is equally as
loaded: No. 10 Washington State,
No. 14 Arizona, No. 18 Washing
ton and No. 22 UCLA could all
take their shots at knocking off No.
1 Stanford and No. 5 Oregon, mak
ing this the toughest conference
race in the country.
"We are really starting to come
together as a team," Aubrey said.
“This has been a strange season
because we haven’t had just one
guy lead us the whole season; we
have all raced well at different
times. I think we have five or six
guys who are running real strong
right now.
