Utes: Injuries may keep
Fuamatu-Ma’afala out
■ Continued from Page 1B
score has been its depth at the tail
back position.
The 268-pound Fuamatu
Ma’afala is the country’s biggest
at the position. Despite missing
last week's game against SMU,
he has rushed for 452 yards and
ranks 37th in the nation with
over 90 yards per game.
Johnson was the Utes’
rushing attack against SMU.
totaling 112 of Utah’s 143 yards
on the ground. His two
touchdowns against the
Mustangs gives him a team-high
six for the season.
On the down side...
! Utah was held to just 19
| points against SMU, over a
’ touchdown less than its 26.8
| point per game average.
| The Utes scoring offense has
wilted in the second half. Utah
[ has scored just three second-half
I touchdowns in its last three
! games, not the point production
I head coach Ron McBride was
hoping for from one of the
| WAC’s highest scoring teams a
I season ago.
Fuamatu-Ma’afala, the WAC’s
| preseason offensive player of the
I year, is a load when he enters the
game, but injuries have slowed his
| touchdown production to just two
■ this season and a sprained ankle
| will most likely keep him out of
■ Saturday’s game with the Ducks.
“Our offense needs to be more
physical, all the way around,’
McBride said. “There is no flow
to our offense. It’s discouraging
and we have to get into a tempc
and then sustain it.”
On the up side...
Utah has one of the nation’s
toughest defenses to score
against. Its 18.3 points allowed
per game ranks third in the WAC
and 28th in the country.
On the down side...
The Utes’ defense has been
good enough to keep them in
close games; however, Utah is 1
2 this season in games decided
by a touchdown or less.
Utah missed three field goals
and had an extra point blocked
late in the fourth quarter in last
week’s 20-19 loss to SMU.
“We just didn’t execute ... Our
defense kept us in the game, and
then our kicking game killed us,’1
McBride said.
On the up side...
A loss against a nonconfer
ence opponent, such as Oregon,
won’t hurt Utah’s chances for
making a run at the WAC title.
On the down side...
A loss to the Ducks would be
the Utes’ third in a row, and
make a WAC title the only way
Utah can make it to the postsea
son.
