Business school donor
recognized 30 years
after contribution
Mildred Rogers’ gift has
established a business
professorship in honor of
her late husband
By Teri Meeuwsen
Higher Education Reporter
Almost 30 years after giving a
$100,000 donation to the Charles
H. Lundquist College of Business,
Baker City resident Mildred
Rogers was personally recognized
for her charity Sept. 11 in her
hometown.
While visiting with University
President Dave Frohnmayer in a
family gathering, Rogers received
a certificate for her lifetime contri
butions to the University and her
status as a Lifetime Gold member
of the President’s Associates, the
University's premier donor group.
Rogers, 94, has been a promi
nent contributor to the University
and Baker City. Her daughter,
Edna Harrell, said Rogers has been
a supporter of many local and re
gional organizations, including
the YMCA, the Sam-O-Swim Cen
ter, the Baker County Library, the
Oregon Trail Interpretive Center
and the First Presbyterian Church.
But Rogers has always had an in
terest in the University as well,
Harrell said.
“I’m pleased she’s this interest
ed in the community and the Uni
versity,” Harrell said. “And it’s
wonderful to see her give now
while she’s still around. It means a
lot more when (contributors) are
living instead of after they’ve
passed on.”
Rogers’ contribution to the busi
ness school established an en
dowed business professorship in
memory of her husband, John B.
Rogers. He was a 1925 business
graduate and a prominent Oregon
banker from Baker City. He served
as vice president and ultimately
president of the First National
Bank in Baker City, and when
First National merged with U.S.
National Bank in 1959, he was
named vice president of the Baker
City branch. He also served as
president of the Oregon Bankers
Association and director of the
Portland branch of the Federal Re
serve Bank of San Francisco.
In addition to Rogers’ gift, the
John B. Rogers Professorship en
dowment has received contribu
tions from U.S. Bank, U.S. Ban
corp and Den Norske Creditbank
of Norway, said Carole Daly, de
velopment officer for the busi
ness school. Total contributions
have exceeded more than
$700,000.
Rogers’ contribution to the
University made her a Lifetime
Gold member of the President’s
Associates. To be a Lifetime Gold
member, a private party must
contribute $50,000 or more to the
University, making Rogers a
member since her contribution in
the 1960s. However, Daly said
donors were not honored the
way they are today because dona
tions were not used as much in
financing the University.
“We didn’t have a fund-raising
program back then like we do
now, and no real established way
to honor donors,” Daly said.
Harrell said when her mother
donated to the University, she
did not receive an award but in
stead was contacted by Universi
ty staff.
“She was invited to football
games and president’s dinners
and other things but couldn’t
make it to all of them because, at
that time, she was getting older
and it was harder to make it
around,” Harrell said.
Daly said press releases and
news stories were a means to rec
ognize Lifetime Gold members,
but just recently, certificates were
created to give the donors per
sonal recognition. The certifi
cates are framed in a marble
green, black and gold frame and
are embossed with a gold Presi
dent Associates seal.
“I don’t think we could ever
thank our donors enough,” Daly
said.
Among other awards, Rogers
received the 1995 Baker City
Mother of the Year award. But
Harrell said her mother doesn’t
need all of this recognition.“She
likes to be an anonymous donor,”
she said. "She just enjoys the ben
efits that her donations provide.”
