Kathryn Owen plans to
use the fund-raising skills
she gained in Colorado
for the University

When new Associate Vice Presi
dent Kathryn Owen joins the Uni
versity’s development staff
Wednesday, she plans to uphold
the University’s work on the in
creases in donations and support
from private parties.
Her position was broadened
and redefined during a recent re
organization of the Development
Office. Duncan McDonald, the
vice president for Public Affairs
and Development to whom Owen
will report, said the University's
Development Office has grown as
more supporters make donations
to programs, departments and
scholarships.
As a result, someone who pos
sessed the necessary technical and
leadership skills was needed to or
ganize and lead the development
office, McDonald said. He believes
Owen is a good representative of
these qualities.
“She will be a strong technician
for fund raising, a teacher for
deans who are also fund raising
for their own schools and pro
grams and an ambassador to alum
ni,” he said.
When Owen was the director of
development for the College of
Arts and Sciences at the Universi
ty of Colorado, the institution’s
funds increased by more than $15
million and annual gifts from
alumni, parents and friends went
up 12 percent annually.
Owen said she plans on using
the skills she gained at the Univer
sity of Colorado to finish the Uni
versity of Oregon’s $200 million
capital campaign by December
1998 and help plan post-campaign
activities.
“I’m very excited and honored
to join the University’s team,”
Owen said.
She will also oversee gift plan
ning, the annual fund, the Port
land development program, cor
porate, foundation and donor
relations, and school and college
development programs.
Owen was selected from 17 can
didates by a search panel chaired
by University Librarian George
Shipman. Other members includ
ed Bella Corbin, director of alumni
and development information ser
vices for the UO Foundation, and
Marian Friestad, associate profes
sor of marketing in the Charles H.
Lundquist College of Business.
David Begun, development di
rector for the College of Arts and
Sciences and a member of the
panel, said after a national search
and a lengthy process of reviewing
applicants, Owen was the best fit.
“We are delighted that she was
attracted to our program but not
surprised with her caliber that she
was interested in our organiza
tion,” he said.
