The Bulls decided against deal ing Pippen to Boston for its two first-round picks, the third and sixth overall, as had been ru mored. Boston coach Rick Pitino said the Bulls wanted too much in a deal that reportedly also was to in clude Chicago center Luc Longley. “They wanted to really sweeten it, and we couldn’t do that,” Pitino said after the Celtics selected Chauncey Billups and Ron Mer cer. With so many trade rumors cir culating, the draft’s first few mo ments were comparatively serene. Just before 7:40 p.m. EDT, com missioner David Stern announced the Spurs’ selection of Duncan, the consensus college player of the year in 1996-97 at Wake For est and the first player to repeat as a unanimous first team All-Ameri can selection since Shaquille O’Neal in 1990-91 and 1991-92. Duncan, who averaged 20.8 points and led the nation in re bounding with 14.7 per game, be came the first college senior to be chosen No. 1 overall since Larry Johnson in 1991. Wearing a tan designer suit without a necktie, Duncan looked to have tears in his eyes as he walked onstage wearing a Spurs cap and shook the commissioner’s hand. A crowd of about 10,000 at Charlotte Coliseum, some of whom made the trip from Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C., was on its feet applauding Dun can.
