Family housing construction to be completed this summer The new Spencer View apartments in clude several features that will make life easier for residents By Jennifer Schmitt Community Editor JL X. yellow, teal and coral will soon be mixing with the rainbow of colors that already distinguishes the Spencer View family housing apartments as the second and final phase of construction is completed this August. Similar to the 132 exist ing apartments, the 140 new two-bedroom apart ments are divided into color-coded “neighbor hoods,” said Frank Gaddi ni, area director for University housing. The front door of each apart ment is then painted to match the other doors in the complex. The colors are designed to act as bright, simple identifiers for students and their vis itors, Gaddini said. partments with doors of orange, This is a good feature for students when they are trying to give family mem bers directions,” Gaddini said. “It is also good for emergencies to be able to say ‘I live in the red neigh borhood.’” Since the idea behind the apartments is to give priority to students with families, the apartments and surrounding areas are designed for children and parents. Every kitchen has a window that looks out onto one of the 10 play grounds that are spread throughout the neighbor hoods. “This was designed so that a parent can be inside and watch their child without having to hover over them the whole time,” Gaddini said. “We really want this to be a safe place for children.” The neighborhoods are arranged in clusters around a common build ing that provides office space, a community room, maintenance supplies and a child care center. The apartments are part of the University family housing program, and all of the apartments’ phone lines are linked to the University’s telecommu nications package. The apartments have the same phone system that is used on campus, Gaddini said. “They can still use the six-plus-four extensions to call campus,” he said. “And their monthly bill comes with their rent package. ” Unlike the Phase One apartments, which have one ethernet link per apartment, the new apart ments have an ethernet port in every room so stu dents can set up their computers in any room and connect to the main frame on campus. “We wanted to provide flexibility,” Gaddini said. “Now a student can put their computer in the qui etest room or by the win dow; wherever they want.” Each of the 700-square foot apartments also has its own private patio. The complex is also sur rounded on three sides by a greenbelt, Gaddini said. Applications and reser vations on the apartments are being accepted by Uni versity housing right now for fall term. “Buildings are going up right now, and things are going very well,” said Michael Eyster, director of University housing. “Things are going much faster in this phase than in the first one, and we anticipate being right on time to meet our dead line.” Rent for the apartments will not be settled until after a public hearing on May 28, but the proposed rate for a two-bedroom apartment is $445 a month, Eyster said. Because Spencer View is categorized as family housing, the first priority is given to students with children. Graduate students are the next priority, followed by undergraduates over 21, Eyster said. s/JiLfM 3/nuj. » spurn/ uado • Aouajoyja 3.000 • 300 0 0u}33j0-nojod c: c: 3 3 3 3 rv to O O 3 3 c 3 <2 to :r NEED A CHANGE IN YOUR HOUSING SITUATION?
