Care should be taken when packing belongings for a move
Planning and fore
thought can result in
a more organized
moving experience
Following is a list of
supplies, hints and
how-to’s for packing
and moving.
Packing Supplies
• Tissue paper and un
printed newsprint
(newspaper ink can soil
and even damage some
items)
•2” plastic packaging tape
(to assemble and close
cartons)
• Masking tape
• Utility knife
• Permanent markers
Boxes
• 1.5 cu. ft. boxes (book
box). Use for heavy or
dense items including
books, records, shoes,
canned goods, kitchen
canisters, small appli
ances and hand or pow
er tools.
• 3 cu. ft. boxes. General
purpose size. Good for
lampshades, pots and
pans, kitchen utensils,
etc.
• 4.5 and 6 cu. ft. boxes. For
large, light-weight items
such as pillows and
bedding. Do not over
load.
• Dishpacks specially de
signed with cell di
viders for transporting
dishes, glasses, bowls
and other kitchenware.
Also good for lamps,
small pictures, knick
knacks, light appli
ances.
Planner
• Have an inventory ses
sion. Decide what to
move, what not to move.
• Schedule a moving sale
for items you won’t
move. Donate other
items to charitable orga
nizations.
• Make arrangements to
discontinue:

■ Local and Long Dis

• Mail change-of-address
cards to:
■ Post Office
■ Social Security Office
■ Insurance companies

ough air-drying to pre
vent mildew. Arrange
for disposal of frozen

eat). Clean oven.
• If you are moving home,
have your car serviced
and have proof of insur
ance in car.
• Remember to pack a box
of the basics you’ll need
on move-in day (tools,
paper products, all-pur
pose household clean
ers, etc.). Be sure to have
it loaded last so that it

Packing
Personal Computers
These steps will prepare
your computer for trans
port. Consult a local com
puter dealer for more de
tails
1. Back up software and
data files.
2. Park the hard drive
(some computers may
require special steps—
others will do it auto
matically).
3. Insert cardboard or an
old disk into disk dri
vels).
4. Pack manuals and soft
ware in separate
boxes.
5. Unhook all cables and
power cords— be sure
to indicate position for
ease in setting up. Pack
with manuals.
6. Keep software licensing
information and serial
numbers with important
papers.
7. Pack in original cartons if
available or use a suit
able sized carton.
8. Use static-free packing
materials (standard bub
blewrap and packing
peanuts are NOT static
free). The best option is
unprinted wadded
newsprint.
9. Create a base layer of
wadded unprinted
newsprint and place
computer on top of lay
er. Then surround sides
and top with more
wadded newsprint until
firmly packed. Seal shut
with packaging tape.
10. Follow the same steps
for monitors and key
boards.
11. Remove full or empty
ink cartridges from
printers.
12. Pack printer using steps
seven through nine.
13. If you have a pin print
er, slip a piece of paper
in the plenum.
CD Players/VCRs
1. Never transport CD play
ers with CDs in
tray/stack or VCR’s with
tapes left inside.
2. Some CD players may
have a lockdown screw.
Consult your owners
manual or local elec
tronics dealer for more
information.
3. Pack CD player/VCR in
original carton or a suit
able carton. Layer bot
tom of carton with
wadded unprinted
newsprint. Place VCR or
CD player on top of
newsprint padding and
continue to pad all sides
and top of player with
wadded newsprint until
box is full. Seal the car
ton shut with packaging
tape.
4. Pack CDs or VCR tapes in
separate small cartons
suitable for books.
