WEDNESDAY’S TOPIC: Crime & Safety
Student threw bottle
Officers from the Eugene police
department were dispatched to a
criminal mischief call at Duck’s
Village on May 15 at about 1:08
a.m. to find a University student
cornered in apartment 0-171 by a
group of subjects. According to
police reports, the suspect, who
was cornered in the apartment,
had attended a party earlier in
apartment T-219. He was kicked
out of the party because he had
been disorderly and had uninten
tionally caused damage to the res
ident’s couch. After being kicked
out, police said the suspect threw
a beer bottle at the window of
apartment T-219 and broke it. He
was then chased through Duck’s
Village into the apartment of
some friends of his in 0-171.
When officers arrived the suspect
told police that he didn’t remem
ber being at the party and had
been asleep for the last two hours.
After a further investigation, the
suspect admitted to having bro
ken the window and told police
that he was angry for having been
kicked out. The suspect was
charged and released.
Man caught speeding
A University student was ob
served by an officer from the Eu
gene police department driving
his vehicle at high rates of speed
between traffic lights on Franklin
Boulevard at 12:53 a.m. on May
16. Police reports said the suspect
consistently stopped near the
middle of an intersection, so the
officer paced his speed and found
the suspect to be going 39 mph in
a 25 mph speed zone. The officer
activated his overhead lights, and
the suspect accelerated away at
speeds of up to 72 mph. After a
brief pursuit through the West
University area, the suspect final
ly pulled over to the right-hand
side of the road. He was hand
cuffed and charged with attempt
ing to elude a police officer. The
officer asked the suspect why he
didn’t stop when he saw the over
head lights, and the suspect told
the officer that he had the radio
on and wasn’t aware of him.
Stargazers arrested
Three people were found on the
roof of the administration build
ing of McArthur Court by officers
from public safety on May 20 at
2:44 a.m. The students said they
went up on the roof to “star gaze,”
even though they were aware of
the sign that stated that the area
was prohibited. Eugene police of
ficers arrived at the request of the
public safety officers and charged
the three with trespassing.
Box of checks stolen
A box of checks was stolen from
the mail while en route to a Uni
versity student’s apartment at
1750 Alder street. The student
learned of the incident when his
checking account was overdrawn
by more than $1000. He called the
bank, and they informed him that
about ten of his checks had recent
ly bounced, causing the account to
be overdrawn. The student had no
knowledge of the checks ever hav
ing been sent and told the bank
that he did not order them. Police
are calling the incident a third de
gree theft, but no suspect informa
tion is available at this time.
Box holds mushrooms
The office of public safety was
alerted of a box that was traveling
back and forth from Hamilton
Complex to the post office when it
was discovered that address listed
on the box didn’t exist. Upon
opening it, officers found a small
bag of illegal mushrooms. One
subject attempted to pick up the
package, according to reports, but
was unsuccessful. When the per
son whose name was on the pack
age was notified, police learned
that he was not the person who
tried to pick up the package. No
one was charged.
Computer stuff taken
A computer and its accessories
were stolen from 1761 Alder St.,
room 110, at about 3:45 p.m. on
May 12. The victim told police
that a colleague was supposed to
pick up the package, but didn’t, so
he reported it stolen. The victim’s
room is located near the back
door of the building.

charged with minor in possession

toxicated near Pizzano’s at 3 a.m.
on May 16. He told officers that he

worked for the pizza shop and in
tended to go inside and make a

with shoplifting when they were
apprehended shortly after trying
to leave the bookstore without
paying for a pair of sunglasses and
