represents one person who was killed as a result of alcohol abuse.
Drinking: Activities offer
alternative to alcohol
■ Continued from Page 1
“We are trying to promote al
ternatives to drinking,” Dochnahl
said. “A lot of students claim
there is nothing to do around
campus but drink, so we’re
putting on a Fun Run today.”
The 5K Fun Run is billed as an
event to “show drinking and dri
ving sucks.” The run begins to
day at 4 p.m. on the east lawn of
the EMU. Everyone who partici
pates is eligible for prize draw
ings, plus refreshments.
Immediately following the run
will be a free concert open to the
public on the EMU East Lawn by
local band Jacob Marley’s Ghost
from 5 to 8 p.m.
GAMMA is also working inde
pendently to promote its philos
ophy around the University this
week.
“We’re doing a windshield
wash on cars parked around
campus,’’GAMMA co-chairper
son Stacie Doran said. “After we
wash their windshields, we will
be putting a flier on their car say
ing we have done something for
you, so you can do something for
us by not drinking and driving.”
GAMMA is also working on
other projects unrelated to Alco
hol Awareness Week. One idea
the group has is for members to
place mock parking tickets on
cars that include blood-alcohol
charts showing how much alco
hol must be consumed to pro
duce a specific blood-alcohol lev
el, as well as the phone numbers
for Saferide and taxi services.
“It’s very important that this
message hits home,” Doran said.
“Students tend to have an im
mortality complex, but they need
to realize that they’re not immor
tal.
That’s why the Grim Reaper
project is so effective. It shows
people our age who have died as
a result of drinking and driving.
People need to realize alcohol re
quires responsibility, and it af
fects everyone around you.”
Students who believe they, or
someone they know or care
about, may have a drinking prob
lem can contact the health center,
the University counseling office,
the University crisis line or a lo
cal chapter of Alcoholics Anony
mous. All will provide anony
mous counseling and support.

Why do more students
take Kaplan than
any other prep course?
Maybe it's the expert instructors
who know the test inside out...or
the individualized study plans that
focus on your needs ..then again,
it could be the #3 million Kaplan
spends each year on research, far
more than the competition.
We like to think it's all of these.
The simple fact is it you
take Kaplan you'll get a
higher score.
