Table tennis wins
state title on forfeit
The Oregon Club men’s table
tennis team won the Oregon Col
legiate State Championship by
forfeit when the other teams
failed to show up.
The tournament, which was to
be held in Gerlinger Hall Satur
day, did not take place after teams
from Portland State and Portland
Community College failed to ap
pear.
The forfeit gives the Ducks their
third consecutive state title.
Tae Kwon Doe
members compete at
nationals
Head coach Robert Kim and
two of liHL-Oregon judo Club
members returned Tuesday from
Oakland, Calif., site of the 23rd
U.S. National Tae Kwon Doe
Championships.
Kim, a second-degree black-belt
in the featherweight division,
was victorious in his opening
match but lost his second by a
point.
John Drath, the team’s assistant
coach and a first-degree black-belt
in the welterweight division,
fought to a draw in his opener, but
lost on decision.
Catie Clinton, a first degree
black-belt in the women’s welter
weight division, lost her opener
as well, by a single point. Clinton
did win the bronze medal in the
forms competition, a non-contact
event in which competitors Eure
judged on performance of set pat
terns of maneuvers.
All three club members will
next compete at the Collegiate Na
tionals in October. Medalists at
that event will be entered in com
petition for a spot on the U.S. Na
tional team next June.
Martial arts shown to
students in Bean West
The Bean West conference
room was alive and kicking
Thursday night as Oregon’s tae
kwon do and wushu Clubs gave
demonstrations for all interested
parties.
The evening’s schedule began
with clubs giving individual
demonstrations of their respective
arts. The event concluded with
club members comparing the dif
ferent ways each discipline
would react to certain maneuvers.
Judo Club wins eight
medals at tournament
The Oregon judo Club returned
to Eugene from this weekend’s
Pacific Northwest Judo Champi
onships in Tacoma, Wash., with
eight medals in hand.
The event featured judo clubs
from around the world, including
a Russian contingent with 35
members Other countries repre
sented at the event included
Brazil, Canada and Japan.
For the Ducks, head coach
Sergei Matveev took silver in the
masters’ division for black-belts at
156 pounds Two other Oregon
black-belts medaled as well, both
taking bronze. Nathan Pietsch
took third at 165 pounds, and Jun
ya Kusano was third at 130
pounds.
Five Oregon white-belts
medaled as well. Barry Neal took
silver at 185 pounds, Jason Cook
took silver at 171 pounds, Bran
don Adams took bronze at 149
pounds and Kasushi Yukiyama
took bronze at 135 pounds.
In the women’s division Ore
gon’s Beth Allen received the sil
ver medal in the 122 pound class.
Next up for judo club members
is the Oregon State Games in Cor
vallis June 24.

The Pacific-10 Conference
Rowing Championships will be
held this Sunday at Lake Natoma
in Rancho Cordova, Calif., and
Oregon is entered in three races.
Competing for the Ducks will
be the varsity men’s open four,
the varsity women’s open four
and the novice women’s open
eight.

ing the hot weather and consider
ing the fact that we were missing
so many of our players,” fullback
Jarrad Janssen said. “ It’s difficult
to keep the energy level up on the
road with only eleven guys.”
The loss and tie over the week
end dropped the Ducks to 3-1-1 in
the spring season.
