built next to Esslinger.
■ GROWING SOUTHEAST:
The majority of room to expand is in residential

CAMPUS PLANS OF THE PAST
▲ ELLIS
LAWRENCE
1932 PLAN:
As an update to his 1914
plan, Lawrence creates a
formal arrangement of open
spaces and classically inspired
buildings. The interlocking
quadrangles still shape the feel of the
modern campus. In an unrealized idea,
Lawrence places a large auditorium
where the Knight Library now sits.
▲ LAWRENCE LACKEY 1962 PLAN:
During a period of rapid expansion on campus, the University actually
considers using the Pioneer Cemetery as a possible building site.
The science complex is proposed, and the area in the southeast is
intended for more residence halls. The EMU has not had its skylight addition.
