Frank: Giants surprise the NL west
■ Continued from Page 11
was just toying with the rest of the league by losing
three of its final four or if the Bulls are actually
slumping for the first time in two seasons. Chances
are they were just toying with the rest of the league.
The NFL Draft, the lone event that keeps ESPN’s
Mel Kiper Jr. employed, took place last weekend,
and three former Ducks had their names called.
Kenny Wheaton, who left the Ducks after his ju
nior season, suffered from slow 40-yard sprint times
at NFL workouts (consistently 4.7) and an extreme
ly talented crop of comerbacks. The former Duck
dropped to the end of the third round, 94th overall.
Tony Graziani was a surprise after he recovered
from the knee injury he suffered last season. He will
be reunited with former Oregon head coach Rich
Brooks in Atlanta as he was selected by the Falcons
with the third pick in the seventh round.
Finally, there is baseball.
Surprise, surprise, Atlanta is off to a quick start at
13-4. But what is a surprise is the Giants’ start.
With their win over Florida Sunday, the Giants
have won nine in a row and are leading the National
League west at 13-3.
And in the American League, Seattle’s bullpen
struggled at the start of the season, which was ex
pected, but the Mariners jumped on Ken Griffey Jr.’s
hack and have won nine of their last 11 games.
Griffey’s home run in Seattle’s 10-6 win Sunday
was his ninth of the season.
Maybe as soon as Griffey starts to slow down and
the NBA and NHL playoffs are over, I’ll have
enough time to be able to pass my 12 credits.

Ducks rained out
at OSU, play
at home today
The Oregon softball team’s dou
bleheader with Oregon State was
rained out Saturday in Corvallis.
The game was postponed, but no
date was set for the makeup games
at press time.
If the weather cooperates, the
Ducks will play Simon Fraser in a
single game at 3 p.m. at Howe
Field. Oregon is 8-0 against the
Canadian university, winning a
doubleheader 4-3 and 10-6 the last
time the two teams met in 1995.
Simon Fraser has a trio of hitting
stars in Tina Papatolis, Tracey
TODAY’S SPORTS
Snedden and Michelle Shute, who
are batting .484, .452 and .415 re
spectively.
The Simon Fraser pitching staff
holds a team 1.30 ERA and has six
shutouts on the season.
Jennie Cook will likely get the
start on the mound forthe Ducks.
Oregon will get back into Pacific
10 Conference action Wednesday
at Washington in a doubleheader
starting at 2 p.m.
