NOMINATION DEADLINE: APRIL 4,1997
Now is the time to make nominations for awards which will be presented at Spring
Commencement to University of Oregon faculty members for distinguished teaching.
Graduate teaching fellows, who have their own competition, are ineligible for these
awards. Each of these awards will be accompanied by a monetary prize. Students,
faculty, staff and alumni can submit nominations. If you wish to make a nomination,
you should send it to the following address using the form below or another sheet of
paper:

Eligibility for Awards
Ersted Award Tor Distinguished Teaching
The late Mr. A. J. Ersted established the Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching so
the University of Oregon could annually honor faculty members “who have taught
comparatively short periods and have demonstrated exceptional abilities to induce
students to reason and not merely memorize.” The Ersted Award can go only to
faculty who are early in their teaching careers. This teaching may occur at the
undergraduate or graduate level.
Thomas F. Herman Faculty Achievement Award for Distinguished Teaching
This award continues the tradition begun by the Burlington Northern Foundation by
honoring senior faculty members who have achieved outstanding records as teachers.
The Thomas E Herman Award can go only to faculty members who have held academic
rank at the University of Oregon for at least seven years, and who have demonstrated
excellence in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Students visit
the Grand Canyon
The University Office of Interna
tiona! Education and Exchange
sponsored a trip to the Grand
Canyon during spring break.
Fou rteen students traveled through
Utah and Arizona to see the sights.
“It was an awesome experi
ence," International Students office
manager Karen Susilo said. “The
trip was worth it. We sang songs
and told stories, and we got to see
a lot of nature and go hiking.”
The group—which consisted
of students from Mexico, Japan,
Indonesia, Taiwan, Nepal, Korea,
Hong Kong and the United States
—went camping and saw a variety
of canyons and Zion National Park.
“It was freezing [while camp
ing], but it was still a lot of fun,”
Susilo said. “This was the first time
fora lot of us to see the canyons
and to just get out into nature.”
Susilo said the trip was
especially enjoyable because the
people were from various coun
tries. “We learned a lot from each
other," she said.
This trip is part of a series of
ongoing trips and conferences the

Students Association peer assis
tants are sponsoring this year. For

Presentation looks
at Borneo’s culture
The culture of people living on
the island of Borneo is closely

linked to the island’s tropical rain
forest. How development of the
rain forest affects the culture is the
topic for a slide show and presen
tation today.
The presentation is sponsored
by the University’s Survival Center
and features artists and photojour
nalists who have traveled to the
island.
Sarifa Rohaya, who grew up on
the island, will discuss the struggle
of ttte native people to continue
living as they always have in a land
that Is continually changing. The
tropical rain forests of Borneo are
the oldest in the world, said
Michael Turaski, co-coordinator
for the Survival Center.
The hour-and-a-half presenta
tion will not only feature slide
shows but music and stories also,
Turaski said.
“Students can learn about the
diversity of cultures and the link to
the biological world that is so
vital,” he said. “Whether it is Bor
neo or the Willamette National
Forests, people need to see the
connections between people and
the environment and get involved.”
The presentation Is free and
open to the public. It will happen
today at 7 p.m. in 180 Prince
lucien Campbell Hall.
