Aztecs’ defense key
to tourney success

For the San Diego State
women’s basketball team, (23-6
overall, 15-1 Western Athletic
Conference), the name of the game
is defense.
The Aztecs lead the nation in
scoring defense, allowing 51
points per game. And the 71
points they surrendered to USC
on Dec. 1 is the most scored by an
opponent all season.
“I think that our team has been
able to achieve what we have be
cause of our high level of energy,”
said Aztecs head coach Beth
Burns, who was voted WAC
Coach of the Year after guiding her
team to its third conference title in
the last four years.
“Everybody now is very defen
sive-minded,” said Jodi Nowlin
Tres, the senior forward who
leads the team with 16 points, 7
rebounds and 3.4 steals a game.
Bums said the team’s high-ener
gy defense leads to scoring oppor
tunities.
“We play 95 feet of defense,”
Bums said. “We get a lot of points
off our defense.”
Oregon head coach Jody Runge
recognizes San Diego State’s de
fense prowess. Last year the
Ducks escaped a narrow 57-52
victory in Eugene.
“They’re a very aggressive
team,” said Runge. “They play
full-court man-to-man defense in
your face.”
