Move: Road to cross will be closed

the cross controversy. After vot
ing on the proposal, Councilman
Bobby Lee asked, “Does that put
an end to this whole chapter
now?”
Without U.S. District Court ap
proval, the book is yet to be con
cluded. A city attorney will be
busy drafting the bible college
proposal for a March 29 court
hearing, but without court accep
tance, it will be back to the draw
ing board for the city.
If the court grants the recom
mendation, city attorney Glenn
Klein said city manager Vicki
Elmer would be in the position to
start the effort to relocate the
cross.
In a new development regard
ing the cross controversy, citi
zens will no longer be able to dri
ve to the current location of the
cross atop Skinner Butte after
March 21 because of mainte
nance difficulties due to cutbacks
from Measure 47.
In a press release, Bob Ham
mitt, maintenance director for
Public Works, said the deteriorat
ed condition of the road, reduced
staffing and vandalism and crim
inal activity occurring near the
cross have all led to the closing of
the access road.
Hammitt said these problems
could not be remedied because
the money that would pay for
staff to both fix the road and oth
er vandalism would have to
come from the city’s general
fund. The general fund is being
reduced by the onset of Measure
47.
Hammitt said the access road
will be closed until further no
tice.
