Isn’t it ironic?
I find it pleasantly ironic that the student govern
ment decided to close off a section of seats at Mac
Court to protest the taunting of the Bruins by a few
students. It sort of reminds me of the way some peo
ple complain that it is unfair that a group should be
punished by the actions of a few.
Sherman, set the wayback machine to last spring
when the Eugene city council decided to ban skate
boards and dogs along 13th Avenue. “Unfair” cried
students as they proclaim that to punish a group
based on the actions of a few is wrong. "They’re tar
geting the dogs and skateboarders, and that is dis
crimination. That is wrong.”
It’s the same with other groups. Be it high school
students not being allowed into stores, to the home
less man camping behind some bushes at the local
park. The fact remains that a few do mess up the priv
ileges for the rest. That’s life.
What I find amusing is that the student government
is doing what they themselves have decried as dis
criminatory and unacceptable. Coincidence? I think
not. It seems to me that somebody has just gotten a
dose of common horse sense.

True fans
Congratulations to the University men’s basketball
team for its victory over Arizona on Thursday. De
spite all of the ASUO’s distractions, the team re
mained focused, came together and pulled out a ter
rific win against a nationally ranked opponent.
Head Coach Jerry Green also deserves to be com
mended for his class and professionalism. In his
speech before the game, Green gave positive support
and encouragement to the crowd without validating
the allegations of crowd misconduct.
In his post-game interview, Green echoed what
was in many of the hearts and minds of University
students when he expressed his feelings that the stu
dents have been treated unfairly by both the media
and the administration in recent weeks.
To the fans that rushed the court after the game and
hoisted a triumphant Jerry Green onto their shoul
ders: well done. You are an accurate representation
ol the type of students that attend games at McArthur
Court, regardless of what Glen Banfield or Kris John
son may think.
The conduct of the team, of the head coach and of
the fans only serves to highlight the inappropriate be
havior and overall lack of perspective exhibited by
the ASUO in its decision to rope off a section of stu
dent seats.
If the ASUO truly wants to deal with racism, it
should do so on a campus-wide level and refrain
from making “executive decisions” affecting only
those who attend games at the Pit.
Students do not need, nor do they want any more
of the ASUO’s publicity stunts and symbolic ges
tures. In the end, the only thing as damaging to a cam
pus community as racial division is misdirected and
ineffective student government.
