Meeting: Footnotes
requests on-campus space
■ Continued from Page 1
“Not being located in the EMU
would put us in jeopardy of con
tinuing to exist,” Footnotes Coor
dinator Kristin King said. “We
would last approximately one year
outside of campus... if we were lo
cated on 13th Avenue, we would
have to pay about three times the
rent we pay now.”
King emphasized that Footnotes
has been in operation since 1967
— without the use of student in
centive fees.
“We have never asked for one
dime from the students’ fees,”
King said.
In order to keep the cost of the
notes relatively cheap, the Univer
sity needs to continue supporting
Footnotes by allocating space in
the EMU, said Devon London, a
Footnotes employee and Foot
notes Board Member.
“We don’t gouge students on the
price of our services because we
can operate on the costs for the
notes,” London said. “We are for
the students."
The Footnotes representatives
all voiced a willingness to operate
elsewhere in the EMU, if need be.
Currently Footnotes occupies a
700 square foot space in the EMU,
but representatives said a 500 foot
space is the minimum space need
ed for operating.
“The discussion and debate is
about whether or not the 700
square feet is appropriate — not
whether Footnotes is a valid ser
vice,” said House Member Geneva
Wortman.
This central question was an
swered by many of the Footnotes
employees and supporters.
“We [Footnotes] have operated
as a fiscally-responsible organiza
tion,” King said. “I don’t think
ASUO programs have any more of
a right to exist in the EMU than
does Footnotes.... We need space
in the EMU, and a minimum of
500 square feet.”
The time between Wednesday’s
meeting determining the House
recommendation and the EMU
Board of Directors meeting next
week is a fair amount of time for
misconceptions and concerns to
be clarified, Guevara said.
“The week gives time for every
one involved to think about the in
formation presented and recom
mended, and an informed
decision about Footnotes can be fi
nalized," Guevara said.

Eligibility for Awards
Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching
The late Mr. A. J. Ersted established the Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching so
the University of Oregon could annually honor faculty members “who have taught
comparatively short periods and have demonstrated exceptional abilities to induce
students to reason and not merely memorize.” The Ersted Award can go only to
faculty who are early in their teaching careers. This teaching may occur at the
undergraduate or graduate level.
Thomas F. Herman Faculty Achievement Award for Distinguished Teaching
This award continues the tradition begun by the Burlington Northern Foundation by
honoring senior faculty members who have achieved outstanding records as teachers.
The Thomas E Herman Award can go only to faculty members who have held academic
rank at the University of Oregon for at least seven years, and who have demonstrated
excellence in teaching at the undergraduate or graduate level.
