Senate discusses
University business
The Student Senate met
Wednesday night to discuss Uni
versity business, student seating at
McArthur court and special budget
requests from the Inter-Fraternity
Council and Computer Support.
The senate ombudsman report
ed that there had been several
grievance reports filed by students
this week. The grievances per
tained to the high costs of tuition
and a member of the Programs Fi
nance Committee (PFC).
SETA, a student-run animal
rights group, had its budget sent
directly to the senate on Tuesday.
The group was requesting a 1,386
percent budget increase. The sen
ate will be the group’s last chance
at getting its budget approved be
fore it can enter into an appeals
process.
The EMU Budget Board gave
budget increases to the EMU Tick
et Office and Scheduling Services.
Because of increases in salaries,
wages and the costs of printing,
the EMU Budget Board gave in
creases to the Outdoor Program
and Club Sports. Student Senator
Doug Baker reported that the two
programs that were given increas

es have switched funds around
within their programs to actually
maintain a zero percent budget in
crease or decrease.
The Athletic Budget Senators
reported that the band had been
moved to section one, and that the
seats would not be paid for out of
student funds. They are in the
process of negotiating for more
seats and hope to maintain a de
crease in the budget.
“We’re not going to get a 10 per
cent decrease if we get the seats
that we want,” the senator said.
“There’s room to play.” The struc
ture of student ticket purchases
has also been changed. Many of
the senators agreed. “We need to
get the most seats, no matter what,
and section nine [in McArthur
Court] must be saved at all costs.”
Computer Support asked for a
$15,750 transfer from the surplus
fund to pay for locking down ex
isting computers to prevent theft
and to pay for some programs’
computers. There are approxi
mately 20 programs that do not
have locks or security features on
their computers. The budget
passed.
The Interfraternity Council
asked for a $1,002 budget request
from surplus funds. The request
was for travel and registration ex
penses for two Interfraternity
members to attend the Mid-Amer
ica Greek Conference.
“Retention in fraternities has
been down; so has rush,” Baker
said. “The average grade point av
erages have been below the all
men’s average.” Baker also said
the conference will help many
chapters on campus because the
representatives will come back
with a lot of helpful and useful in
formation.
PFC member Aleena Kliever
stated that the PFC had only been
giving groups approximately 50
percent of the travel expenses
budget that groups had asked for.
Many senators argued that there
are plenty of resources on campus
that will help fraternities bring
their grade point averages up and
that those sources should be uti
lized.
The motion for a loan of $1,002
passed with an amendment to
loan the money out and have it
paid back by June 15,1997.

Portland archbishop visits campus
■ CATHOLIC: Several faculty
and staff members greeted
Francis George on his
informal visit to Eugene

University faculty, staff and stu
dents gathered at an informal re
ception to meet with the Roman
Catholic Archbishop of Portland
Wednesday afternoon.
University President Dave
Frohnmayer was expected to ap
pear to welcome the bishop to the
campus but was unable to make it
to the reception.
“President [Dave] Frohnmayer
said he would be here, but I guess
he couldn’t make it,” said Rev.
Jose Pimentel, pastor of St.
Thomas More Parish, which is
across from Hayward field.
Archbishop Francis George said
the visit gave him a chance to get a
sense of the campus ministry and
to “just meet people and listen to
them.”
“This is my first visit here to see
what the University of Oregon is
like," George said.
Several members of the faculty
and staff attended the reception to
welcome the bishop, including
Len Casanova, former University
football coach. Casanova helped
raise money in the late 1950s to
build the Newman Center, a cen
ter for Catholic students and fac
ulty at the University.
“We had a little room we would
meet in before we built the cen

ter,” Casanova said. “I just saw
there was a large number of
Catholics in the student body and
faculty, and so I went around to
friends of mine and we raised the
money and got supplies to build a
place for us.”
History professor George Sheri
dan said he thought it was impor
tant for the bishop to get to know
the people at the University better.
“We have a very distinct popu
lation on campus,” he said. “I ap
preciate that he is coming down
here and making an effort to get to
know the area and the people. ”
One student said he came to the
reception just for the chance to
talk with the bishop.
“I have heard a lot of positive
things about him, and I wanted the
chance to interact and talk with
him,” said Dominic DeMaio, a
sophomore majoring in Spanish.
Archbishop George was ap
pointed to the Portland Archdio
cese, which consists of the
275,000 Catholics, last May. As
the archbishop, he is in charge of
all the parishes in Western Ore
gon.
The archbishop will be visiting
students at Lane Community Col
lege today and then will return to
Portland.
