Hockey splits Stanford series
■ CLUB SPORTS: Oregon
pounds the Cardinal 6-3
Friday, but falls 4-3
Saturday in intense game
By Alex Pond
Freelance Sports Reporter
Stanford scored with just one
minute, 14 seconds remaining in
the game to defeat the Oregon
Club hockey team 4-3 Saturday at
Lane County Ice Arena. With the
win, the Cardinal avoided the
weekend sweep by the Ducks,
who beat Stanford 6-3 Friday
night in the first of two intense Pa
cific-8 hockey league games over
the weekend.
Saturday’s game was every bit
as close as the final score indicat
ed. Stanford struck first, scoring
just 41 seconds into the game
when Tom Terbell tapped the
puck behind Oregon goaltender
Keith Barbato. Barbato did not ap
pear to see the puck as it slowly
rolled over the goal line.
The Ducks tied the game a little
more than a minute later when
Ezra Louthis received the puck
from Ryan Trout and slapped it
through two Stanford defenders
and past the goalie, finding the
back of the net.
The game remained tied until
the Cardinal scored with 11:54
left in the period to take a 2-1
lead. A power-play goal with 9:45
remaining gave the Cardinal a 3-1
lead, which is where it seemed
the period would end.
I hat was until Uregon s Dan
Helm caught the Stanford goalie
off-balance with seven seconds
left and slapped the puck into the
net, closing the gap to 3-2 heading
into the second period.
The second period was a defen
sive struggle that featured some
spectacular
saves by each
goalie. Ore
gon would
break
through,
however,
with 5:03 left
in the period when Chris Geib
scored off of assists from Helm
and Chris Eberle.
That set the stage for a dramatic
third period. Each team had its
chances to score early but
couldn’t capitalize, thanks in part
to great defensive efforts and
stingy goalies.
Oregon’s best opportunity to
score came with 3:30 left when
they had a power play. However,
Stanford successfully killed it and
the game seemed headed into
overtime.
But the Cardinal broke loose on
a two-on-one breakaway, beat the
Oregon defense and slapped the
puck past Barbato to take the vic
tory.
“The last goal was a defensive
breakdown,” Barbato said. "The
defender took the shooter when
he was supposed to take the pass
er and the Stanford [player] just
made a great pass across the
crease, and I wasn’t able to get
tnere last enougn. I wisn 1 could
have.”
Although the loss was disap
pointing for the Ducks, it should
not overshadow an outstanding
effort in Friday’s victory.
After falling behind by a goal
early, the Ducks woke up with
6:12 remaining in the first period.
For the next minute and 32 sec
onds, they exploded for three
goals and the rout was on. Louthis
scored first, followed by Eberle
and Sean Schoppe.
Oregon scored three more times
in the second period, getting goals
from Flint Duongchak, Brendan
Mafia and Schoppe.
The Cardinal added a couple of
meaningless goals late in the
game to round out the scoring.
While the Ducks played well
collectively, Barbato was out
standing throughout the game, in
cluding a number of spectacular
saves of what seemed to be sure
goals by the Cardinal.
But Barbato wouldn’t take any
credit for the victory, giving
praise instead to his teammates.
“The offense and defense were
incredible tonight,” he said.
“They cleared out in front and I
was able to see the puck.
“They were flying at the ice
tonight, which is amazing for me.
I’m just in awe right now.”
The Ducks, now 12-5-1 on the
season and 5-5-1 in the Pac-8, will
travel to Seattle this weekend for
a pair of games against Washing
ton.
