Art: Exhibit features significant artists

The exhibit, titled “The Fra
grance of Ink,” includes hanging
scrolls, album leaves, fans and
screens that date back to the
Choson Dynasty (1392-1910).
All but four of the paintings
have never been seen outside of
Korea.
Heather Brown, the museum’s
public relations assistant, attrib
utes this to the fragility of the art
works; simply moving these
paintings can be harmful to
them.
“Even exposure to light can
damage these paintings,” she
said.
“The Fragrance of Ink”
includes works by some of the
most significant painters of the
period, such as Yi Kyong-yun,
Chong Son, Kang Se-hwang and
Kim Hong-do. These artists
defined the resurgence of brush
and-ink painting during this era.

Asian art. “This was the first
time they took a look around
them and painted it.”
One example is a painting by
Chong Son that features the Dia
mond Mountains.
“[Chong Son] was trying to
capture the topography and the
specific features,” Lachman
said.
The University is the third of
five to receive the Korean exhib
it. The display has already
passed through New York and
Chicago.
Part of the reason the Univer
sity is included in the tour is its
Asian Studies Program.
“It is very appropriate to have
this exhibit here,” Brown said.
“The museum was established
with Asian art and we’ve recent
ly rewritten our mission state
ment with a focus on Asian art.”
The museum will host an
opening celebration for the
exhibit Jan. 10 in room 180 of
Prince Lucien Campbell Hall at
4:30 p.m. Hwi-Joon Ahn, noted
art historian at Seoul National
University, will lecture. A
reception will follow from 5-8
p.m. at the museum.
The museum is open to the
public from noon-8 p.m.
Wednesday and from noon-5
p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
Kim hopes that American stu
dents will understand Korean
culture and see more than just
trees and mountains.

Stomp: Unique group spellbinds audience

Every three months the group has to replace the
stainless steel sink they use during the perfor
mance.
As Stomp performs each show, they leave
numerous members of the audience spellbound by
their unique performance. Superstar Michael Jack
son viewed the show and called it “brilliant from
beginning to end.”
“Stomp will leave you almost as breathless and
exhilarated as incredibly great sex,” wrote Amy
Yokin in Orbit Magazine.
As Stomp has risen in popularity, it has
appeared on numerous television shows and in
commercials, including “Late Night with David
Letterman” and Coca Cola commercials.
Stomp will perform at the Hult Center Jan. 14 &
15. Tickets are available at the Hult Center box
office or at Fred Meyer FAST1XX outlets and are
$22.50-$35. Both shows will begin at 8 p.m.
