    Domestic violence
program gets funds

extend the education
program at Sacred Heart

It can happen to your neigh
bors. It can happen to your par
ents.
It can happen to your friends,
and it can happen to you.
Womenspace gets about 7,000
calls each year from victims of do
mestic violence.
A recent grant will allow Wom
enspace to better educate the
community about this problem
and launch a domestic violence
program at Sacred Heart Medical
Center.
“The need is really great,” said
Sandy Ragusa, the supervisor of
the social work department at Sa
cred Heart.
“It’s a really serious social prob
lem. I don’t think there’s much in
formation or understanding,” she
said.
The Centers for Disease Control
awarded Womenspace and seven
other sub-agencies $770,000 to
expand their services, Ragusa
said. Boston and Spokane re
ceived similar grants.
More than 80 communities
throughout the country applied
for the grants, Ragusa said.
“We already had a really strong
collaborative effort,” Ragusa said.
“There’s already been good com
munication.”
Womenspace plans to open a
40-hour/week advocacy office for
women who need help but not
shelter, said Carla Orcutt, grant
manager for Womenspace.
It will also expand its educa
tion program into the elementary
schools.
“The office would help a per
son coming in to get the type of
services a person would need,”
Orcutt said.
Sacred Heart will train its
physicians and nurses in how to
assess women for domestic vio
lence, she said.
Sacred Heart already has a poli
cy to ask every female patient
over 15 years old if they feel safe
at home, Ragusa said.
Too often, however, doctors
feel uncomfortable and ignore
that question, she said.
The grant will also help edu
cate every physician in the Peace
Health system of health care, Ra
gusa said.
“I want them all to know about
domestic violence,” she said.
However, a major part of the
new programs will focus on com
munity education, Orcutt said.
This includes expanding educa
tional and counseling programs,
she said.
Too many people think domes
tic violence does not affect them,
she explained.
“That is one attitude we will be
trying to change,” she said. “We
are hoping to make the communi
ty have a better understanding it
is you and I who will change it.”
